UE cannot import generic binaries. Perhaps you're mistaking retail for custom.
I know what the retail music is. I know ive heard CUSTOM music b4 in a map. I know that you can do it in Ue3, maybe i can import it as a game music file, then do a recall command?

You can do it in UE3 because that's the way it's supposed to be done in UE3. It uses an unreal package format container, not external binaries. Maybe look over the map in question. If it's not using a retail song you just haven't heard much or a custom one you picked up along the way somewhere chances are it's just an ambient sound, which is very bad practice. I can list a lot of technical reasons in simple terms if you like.

it cant be done. you would have to include .ogg with the .rom, and instructions telling them to put it in their music folder. i thought you knew this fel??

I figured out a way.

Take the music file and import it as a sound effect. Then have it play the sound effect as a long "music" file

Even with Bit compression, it still has to be 16-bit. but you can compress it down in size, so its not a huge .wav file, and ued still recognizes it.

So you're playing it as an ambientsound but instead of chirping insects it's music?
If yes, then you really shouldn't do this as it's an annoyance to people who want to tamper with their volume settings. The "music" is affected by the Effects slider then so you can't turn it off/down/up in relation to the other sounds.

If someone wants to play his own music either by replacing the in-game music or just by turning it off and running a media player in the background he can't do that as your music would still be heard.
If someone wants to crank up the volume of the music in relation to the other sounds he can't do that and if someone wants to just turn the music down or off so he can hear the sounds better he can't do that either.

So don't do it.

There is a discussion about this here.

no murphy.

I have custom music and im trying to make it so its embedded into the map.

i know you have to give it along with the map and tell people to put it in their music folder. Im not dumb.

Im just trying to think of a way to do it so i dont have to do it that way.

one way i thought of was to convert the MUSIC file to .wav then play it as a sound effect, only in one are of the map

That's cool for something like a radio or a vitrola, but for actually implementing music into a map it's bad practise for the reasons mentioned above.

In the end it's your choice, obviously.

i know UE will only accept WAV but damn thats really going to increase the filesize by alot!
yea you can compress the music files and still keep it 16bit though. so a 2 min song will be 10 mgs...not bad if im only gonna have 2-3 custom songs.

But i think im just going to do it the old fashion way, :(

Something else worth mentioning is music (ogg) is streamed from disc whereas sounds (wav) are cached in mem. Decoding ogg uses far less resources than dedicating a large file to mem; enough to cause a noticable performance difference. Very much so if there's a typical playlist of wav "music" being cached.

You can also use it as an ambient sound and trigger it like i did in skatepark at the midlde radio. That kinda works, also my thinking was, if you dont want to hear it dont turn it on. Putting a music file as .ogg works also. The only problem with that is somehow most ppl wont dowload the map. They load it from the server and then they dont load the ogg file. So for that placing a sign into the map could work. Like: want fully sound download ---> here :)
