Instead, you'll get an upgraded M1 Garand. It's called the M14 :p

I love the M14, powerful and accurate but I will miss the garand's "CLING" sound when a clip is empty. Nothing is better than that sound.

I can understand why they got confused. When we were showing the game at PAX, we were still using almost 100% placeholder sounds, many of which were just reused from RO2/RS1. The M14 not only looks very visually similar to the M1 (especially when you're using the sights), but we also had it using the old RS M1 audio, so the confusion is understandable. As others have said though, there's no M1 in this game at this time. Maybe if the ARVN make an appearance in future then it'll get in, but for now it's wholly superseded by the superior M14.

I'm curious, when it came to recording the sounds for the weapons in the game like the M14 did you guys actually go and record live fire similar to how Tripwire did with RO2 or did you guys take recordings of other weapons(or other M14 sound reference material from other sources, for example) and tuned it to what would make sense for a particular weapon?

Ah, fair enough. Cool to hear that Tripwire was able to record live fire for you guys.

The Tripwire guys went out and recorded live fire for us. Being a British studio, we don't have anywhere near the same sort of access to military firearms that the Americans do.

'Murica at its finest. At least we found a peaceful usage of weapons...

As if 99.9% of all weapons in the US aren't used peacefully?

Although not confirmed in the PAX build, I believe I saw the Ithaca Model 37 shotgun in the video below.

Recording the sounds of guns firing so they are well simulated in a video game, which is set during a time and place when they weren't used so peacefully...

That's peaceful use of guns in 'Murica!

Correct on the M37 Shotgun - PAX wasn't the 'final' weapons list at all, it was just everything we felt comfortable showing back in March/April time.

Hope that the MAS 36 (or but that's just a dream , the FM 24/29) will be in the game for the VC

I could see those guns being fun to have as dlc's for the purpose of novelty, but there's no need for them really.

The North Vietnamese will be fine with the Mosin Nagant as their one and only bolt action rifle.

As for the FM 24/29, it wouldn't hurt to have a second option for the machinegunner class, in addition to the RPD.
However, a belt fed RP-46 or Type-58 would be a better choice than the FM 24/29.

I'm agree with you despite the fact that it would have been great to see another rifle than the Mosin Nagant but it was less common than MAS 36 ( and for the MAS 49 it far less common) because of the diffucilty to find 7.5mm ammunition , they were principally use like the FM 24/29 at the beginning of the conflict , so Mosin nagant seems to be the natural choice for represent that era.

But for the RPD it's already a belt fed ( yes an awkward one but a belt fed machine gun) and i don't think that they will put a second one because american only uses M60 (so one belt fed for each ) but if they want to put more i think that RPK or Vz 59 would be good also. And for the FM 24/29 it would have a place only if the american/ARVN has the BAR (both of them are "automatic rifle" that were used at the beginning of the conflict). An other possibility is that they don't care to find equivalent weapons between faction (and that's not a problem for me)

I agree that the currently confirmed belt-fed LMG's for both sides (the M60 and RPD) are sufficient.

However, if the devs do decide to add an extra LMG to both sides, I think the U.S. should have the belt-fed Stoner 63/63A LMG as the alternative option. When compared to the M60, the Stoner 63/63A has both advantages and disadvantages. The Stoner 63/63A LMG could also be fitted with magazines of various ammo capacities including 75,100, and 150; the devs could choose which one of these capacities is the best choice for weapon balancing.

I'm not sure which belt-fed LMG would be the best alternative option for the North Vietnamese. After the RPD, which LMG was used the most by the North Vietnamese between the RPK, Vz-59, and the RP-46/Type-58? Whichever one of those weapons was used most commonly during the latter half of the 1960's would probably be the best option, since that was the time the U.S. was most active during the war.

I still don't see the point in including the FM 24/29 for the North Vietnamese, even if the BAR could act as it's U.S./ARVN counterpart. Both the FM 24/29 and the BAR were obsolete and being phased out of service, despite their use during the earlier years of the war. They have the recoil and bulky weight of LMG's with the lower ammo capacity of assault rifles, so I just don't see how there would be any advantage in using them.
If maps set before 1965 are eventually added, then I guess those weapons would be fitting. I just hope they wouldn't be overly balanced against the newer weapons, it would make them unrealistically overpowered in comparison to the newer weapons.

Keep in mind that we don't go completely nuts on weapons on the first release of a game. Fun as it might be, we can use the resources better elsewhere than producing 5 subtly-different bolt-action rifles. Expect more/weirder variants after release! The main aim is to get a good range at the start. From memory (which is shaky at the best of times, not helped by vodka at this time of night) we're looking at something over 30 weapons at launch.

When you say 30 weapons, are you referring to guns only or are you referring to all weaponry including equipment like grenades and mines?

Are you able to reveal the names of any other guns that haven't been mentioned yet in this thread?

Well from what we know, (and assume there's a standard Vietnamese grenade, that leaves 5-6 unknown weapons and or equipment, remove two for HMG's and you get 2-3...
Not a bad release, off the top of my head this is what RS has in comparison...
RS Has:
Allies: 12
M1903
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
BAR
M1919A6
M2 Flamethrower
M1911
Thompson
M1903 Scoped
Mk2 grenade
M37 Satchel
TrenchGun
(Sorry if these might be wrong in enumeration.)
Axis: 14
Type 38 Rifle
Type 99 Rifle
Type 96 LMG
Type 99 LMG
Type 97 Sniper
Type 99 Sniper
Type 100 SMG
Type 14
Type something Grenade
Type 89 Mortar
Type something Grenade
Type 99 AT Mine
Type 3 HEAT
Katana
Which means 26 or so weapons in RS, 28 if you include MMG/HMG's.
