Well if you consider the pros and cons, I can't think of any reason for using a shotgun over an SMG, not in a military setting at least.

If you were to use a shotgun in that era they would most likely be double barreled. With a wide spread you can fill an entire room with lead in 2 shots. Perfect close quarters weapon.

Not true at all. I wonder where these weapons "experts" pop up from.

Nah, trench guns were pump action shotguns back in WW2, so no need to revert back to double barreled hunting rifles inm WW2.

IIRC they were used mainly because they were effective in clearing a dense jungle from undergrowth and foilage, thus creating a field of view and fire in WW2, rather than clearing trenches like in WW1...

...that's just not true. You're wrong about the double barrel and about the fact that you're spreading over the entire room. Even a sawn-off wouldn't get that kind of spread. Hell, a medieval bombard would struggle for that kind of spread.

Besides, an SMG can clear a room just as well with much more room for error and less need to reload.

Remembering from Combat Mission 2 that there have been shotgun-shell like tank shells. Very deadly to infantry.

Sir Roderick is probably right. I skimmed through the two lists below but couldn't find any shotguns.

You trust wikipedia too much. http://www.militaryfactory.com/worldwar2/weapons.asp

and

Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight Also known as Ithaca 37
Model 12 or M12
Remington Model 31

Or do a search for Trench guns, or combat shot guns.
You will find that they have been used since the War of Northern Aggression.

Lobo, he is talking about shotguns in Stalingrad. The Ithaca is an american shotgun and afaik not in use in Stalingrad.
