I just wanted to know where you guys stand on where to hit the Soviet Iosef Stalin 2 (IS-2) tank. I have pictures with circles with corresponding numbers in them, choose a number or choose a response of maneuver around to get a better shot. Also, after reviewing all the photos, please select the photo in which the enemy is in the best position from being destroyed. A response such as this is acceptable:

Picture 1: x or maneuver around to get a better shot.
Picture 2: x or maneuver around to get a better shot.
Picture 3: x or maneuver around to get a better shot.
Picture 4: x or maneuver around to get a better shot.
Picture 5: x or maneuver around to get a better shot.
Picture where it's hardest to defeat the enemy: x
Now, for the pictures (All pictures are from the pespective from you, the tank, assume it's like it was in combat):

IS-2 dead ahead, facing forward, no cover:
PantherVersusIS-21.jpg

IS-2 dead ahead, facing diagonally, no cover:
PantherVersusIS-22.jpg

IS-2 from behind, facing diagonally behind, no cover:
PantherVersusIS-23.jpg

IS-2 dead ahead, facing forward, cover behind a hill:
PantherVersusIS-24.jpg

IS-2 dead ahead, facing diagonally, cover behind a hill:

Thanks for any response, hopefully this will advance some tactics facing IS-2s in Ostfront!

That supposed to mean something?

'Kelly's Heroes' , Oddball (Donald Sutherland) talking about how to take out a Tiger.

'There is only one way to take out a Tiger, point blank and ya gotta hit it in the ass'.... or something like that.

:D

ok, starting off, ill define the armor on the IS-2 to show some reason behind my decisions

_____________Front__________Side_______Rear

Turret ______100/curved_____ 100/18_____100/30

Upper Hull_____120/60_______100/15_____60/49

Lower Hull_____120/30________90/0______60/41

Top____________________30/flat

Ok, Im going to go ahead and say I'm in a Panther tank

Im going to define the Panther penetration values as well, for better understanding.

________________Penetration vs. typical enemy

Armor Angle _______100m_____500m_____1000m_____2000m

____0_____________176______160_______142_______112

____30____________134______123_______110_______88_____AP(925m/sec)
________________________________________________________(APCBC)
____60____________62_______61________61________53

__________________100m_____500m_____1000m_____2000m

____0______________61_______61________55________45

____30_____________57_______53________48________39____HE(700m/sec)

____60_____________36_______34________31________25

Picture 1 - 1 and 3

Picture 2 - 1, 2 or 3

Picture 3 - All locations (the ones that incapacitate would be preferable)

Picture 4 - 2, but 1 as well if guns were damagable

Picture 5 - 3, 4 and 2 (2 if I'm still hitting the side upper hull)

Picture 3 would be my favored postition

I like this idea, I'd like to see simmilar posts for other tanks.

Picture 1: 1, allthough 3 might be better, 1 would be easier to hit
Picture 2: Somewhere between 2 and 4 just because I'm too lazy to manuver, and would probably get killed while doing so
Picture 3: 3
Picture 4: Somewhere between 1 and 2, again easier hit
Picture 5: 3, Reduce chance of reflect

My answers probably aren't THE BEST in the area of dealing damage, but you have to realize that these shots are going to be at range. Also, I'm not a big fan of manuvering around for a better shot, the way I see while your manuvering people are going to be shooting at you, what's the point in trying to get a better shot, if your dead by the time you make it there?

I am by NO means an expert tanker, but this is just my 5 cents. It'll be interesting to see what other people say.

I like the idea of between the hull and the turret.

I remember seeing a program about the Canadian involvment in WWII. It included a Canadian tank commander who had served in Normany after D-Day. He said that when facing a Panther, they would aim just below the mid-line of the gun-mantlet. This meant the shot would be deflect down, onto the hull of the tank, rather than ricochet away. And this was in Shermans, not the up-gunned Firefly. Of course, what with the hedgerows in the areas around Normany, the engagment ranges were often 300 yards or less.

That ties in with what I've been doing since the mod days.

If the target is hull-down and facing vaguely towards me then I'll aim for the turret ring if I can't get a good shot on the hull.

Reason? (on T34s at least)It's a curved surface so you should be able to get a 0-degree hit on it from pretty much anywhere, and also the way most turrets are shaped you may get lucky with the rebound if the shell doesn't penetrate.

If all I can see of a tank is the turret then I'll shoot for whatever flat surface I can find. Sure you're less likely to do catastrophic damage but a hit's a hit...

Yeah, I hope I get more feedback in this thread, it'll be nice to make it common knowledge for where weaknesses and strengths lie in all the tanks in Ostfront.

Picture 1: 3

Picture 2: 2 or 3 with the more powerful tanks (Tiger, Panther) and maneuver around with the less powerful ones (PzIV)

Picture 3: 4

Picture 4: 3 if that region can be seen, otherwise 2

Picture 5: 3 (or sometimes maneuver around) with the more powerful tanks and always maneuver with the less powerful ones

Picture where it's hardest to defeat the enemy: 5

IS-2 doesn't need cover ;), the best I've managed in an IS-2 is 47 consecutive enemy strikes deflected, open field, no cover.

As to your question though, if it is angled properly towards you, don't waste your shell, manuever to get a better shot. If it is broadside to you, aim for the magazine, on the hull just above track in a straight line down from where the turret and barrel meet. Facing you head on or if you're on it's 6, aim low on the hull, bottom 1/2. Similiar to a Tiger in that respect, if you're in an IS-2 hitting the Tiger low on the hull head on will destroy it with a single shell.

If you can get a +/- 5 degrees from head on shot right on the vision block, you can get a one hit kill with the Tiger, Stug or Panther at about 400 meters

Picture 4: , take a shot at the eyeslit, or take a shot at the right track, then manuver to get a better defeating shot

If that was you on the North field of Arad by the trees, Man was I getting frustrated at all my shots bouncing off irrespective of where I was hitting you.

This is the shot trap which is not implemented in the game; firing at this location will just deflect the round away. The lack of it is one of the things which makes Soviet armor overpowered.
