Proper way to change the skybox

What is the proper way to change the sky dome? I went through the sdk and found different materials for the sky at different times of day, but when I apply them they do not show up correctly.

you can make a material instance constant from whichever one of the "working" skybox materials and change settings there

I think you answered my question, maybe I just need to do more research to figure out what you mean by settings.
