In the hills! (of England)
Trenchgun almost all the time, wonderful to use from 0 to 60 metres and you can get some lucky shots past that. :>

M1 carbine would be a close second as it gives a little more range to the class in Rising Storm.

Shotgun most of the time, switching to Tommygun if the map has drums (I play classic). The M1 carbine is handy for longer ranges though. Quite an impressive level of flexibility is afforded to the SL, all things considered.

Why is the shotgun preferred over the Thompson?

I use level 25 Thompson (30 round mag, recoil compensator). It is significantly improved over the default version.

Also, the liking for the M1 carbine in this forum perplexes me as I find it lacking in firepower. I much prefer the M1 rifle for ranged shooting.

Fortunately, there are plenty of M1s lying around so I pick one up as soon as I stumble onto one.

Depends on the situation, really.

If we're gonna be hopping into trenches via the flanks to clear out the japaneses or flush them out of the bushes in Guadalcanal, I use the trenchie.

If we're going to assault buildings or other places where one would expect to spray a lot from the hip, I'd use the tommy with the drum mags.

If it's going to be a wierd mishmash of both of these or there's going to be a lot more range involved, I'd go with the carbine.

I like the trenchgun or m1, mainly because they're kind of new weapon categories, and also they're good and awesome. I don't really use the thompson because I'm still annoyed at the sights and recoil they chose

Carbine. Lots of headshots with it.

As a SL you should keep your distance and stay aluve to keep the reinforcements going to the choke points so the Thompson and Trenchgun dont have the range.

My opinion at least.

Thompson on semi-auto. The sights are easier for spotting targets than the carbine and you can still take out targets over 130m using the binocular trick.

Trenchgun on maps that don't involve a lot of range (Peleliu is a good example, that one in the swamps, I forget its name), if there's range, I use the M1 Carbine. Only time I use the Thompson is if I'm crawling through the dirt with my Springfield and I happen to spot one in my path.

It's highly dependent of what map I'm playing and the situation I'm lost likely to encounter. The Thompson is nice to have in closerange combat, the M1 in longer range combat, and the Shotgun for medium range situations.
