My thoughts on the Portal 2 DLC thing..
It would be like buying a soda at a convenience store or fast-food joint and they hand you a cup with no lid or straw. When you ask for a lid and a straw they tell you that'll be .75 cents more. What's the problem? You still have the soda, you can drink it, the ice is in there... technically it's the 'complete experience'. Except for yesterday the sodas came with a lid and a straw for the original price, now for the same price you don't get a lid and/or a straw. Maybe tomorrow you'll be paying for ice too since enough people paid extra for the lid/straw.
That's the best I can do without much time for a bigger post and little sleep as of late. If you can't see piecemealing of a game as a problem, or the probing nature of the DLC experiment then I dont have much else to say other than it's the precedent it sets. Before you know it you're spending more and more for games and getting less and less. Of course you'll defend the practice based on what you think are harmless and inconsequential attempts at separating you from your money (you dont have to buy it!, it isnt necessary/doesnt change the game!, we're supporting the dev team! - even when it's perpetrated by the biggest, most successful names in the industry). Sorry Shamus Young, innocuous or not, it's the precedent. (and I'd like to know what this guy meant when he says 'core concepts'.. you mean the concepts behind ever-probing business models designed and spun to make you feel either 'happy' or at the very least 'not threatened' by their real intention which is of course to generate more money on-the-cheap.)
It's been said before, big business has been in the world of gaming for some time now and when big business is involved you will always be faced with clever new models trying to get more from you the consumer while actually giving you less in return. This DLC thing is an on-going experiment in the gaming world and it will continue-on probing the limits of what it as a business model can get away with.
If you stand back and look at DLC there is nothing about it whatsoever, no matter how it's presented to you, that is actually beneficial to you as a gamer and consumer. There is nothing beneficial about being able to buy animations at exorbitant prices on release day. DLC is in no way good for gaming and should be shat upon whenever it surfaces.
This of course isnt a reason for me to forego buying the game. The reason I wont buy it right now is based solely on my experience with Portal 1. I thoroughly enjoyed Portal 1, however I played it once through and never touched it again. After hearing the latest one is a mere 7-8 hours of gameplay, it stands to reason I'll wait until it's dirt cheap to buy it.. I'll only play it through once after all.
