Just finished it, what a great game. The best singleplayer FPS experience I've had since Bioshock. The dialogue is what makes this game so great, I felt that the puzzles were only obstacles between me and more dialogue.

The ending is unique and satisfying. Props to Valve, they are one of the few remaining developers committed to unique and quality games.

+1. It's games like this that help push the industry forward from brainless action (not to say those games don't have a place as well but lets get a little smarter from time to time games industry) to something more meaningful, unique, artistic, and impactful. I've only beaten the single player so far but it was superbly polished and expertly paced with hilarious witty dialogue. The visuals were outstanding. Not to add to the overuse of the word epic, but the levels really truly are....err....monume....screw it, EPIC. I kept wanting to play just to see what the next area looked like with all the wonderful lighting effects, animations, and gigantic detailed set pieces.

This game ****ing rocks.

There are plenty of games getting smarter, but the "problem" is that they are relatively obscure in terms of the mass gaming market. The difference is that Portal is a mainstream game that is smart. And that makes all the difference, in my opinion.

If you mean that by mainstream, Portal 2 is blending the great idea with a higher quality set of visuals, audio, and presentation than an obscure title generally can or does, then yes I agree with you. Lots of the obscure titles have the ideas and do a great job of pulling that idea off but games will not start hitting their true potential until those ideas are blended into advanced technology. Then we will start seeing experiences that rival the emotional power, realism, and atmosphere that films can more easily create. Bioshock and Portal 2 are two of the best examples we have of that so far.

there's nothing good about this game aside from the work of the artists. but they don't really have a say in how the game should play, even if maybe they should. there's no way the game could be any worse than it is now. bottom line: the gameplay pales in comparison to the unique visual aesthetics.

10/10 for art

0/10 for execution, pretentious gameplay, and awful business model

final score 5/10

My thoughts on the Portal 2 DLC thing..

It would be like buying a soda at a convenience store or fast-food joint and they hand you a cup with no lid or straw. When you ask for a lid and a straw they tell you that'll be .75 cents more. What's the problem? You still have the soda, you can drink it, the ice is in there... technically it's the 'complete experience'. Except for yesterday the sodas came with a lid and a straw for the original price, now for the same price you don't get a lid and/or a straw. Maybe tomorrow you'll be paying for ice too since enough people paid extra for the lid/straw.

That's the best I can do without much time for a bigger post and little sleep as of late. If you can't see piecemealing of a game as a problem, or the probing nature of the DLC experiment then I dont have much else to say other than it's the precedent it sets. Before you know it you're spending more and more for games and getting less and less. Of course you'll defend the practice based on what you think are harmless and inconsequential attempts at separating you from your money (you dont have to buy it!, it isnt necessary/doesnt change the game!, we're supporting the dev team! - even when it's perpetrated by the biggest, most successful names in the industry). Sorry Shamus Young, innocuous or not, it's the precedent. (and I'd like to know what this guy meant when he says 'core concepts'.. you mean the concepts behind ever-probing business models designed and spun to make you feel either 'happy' or at the very least 'not threatened' by their real intention which is of course to generate more money on-the-cheap.)

It's been said before, big business has been in the world of gaming for some time now and when big business is involved you will always be faced with clever new models trying to get more from you the consumer while actually giving you less in return. This DLC thing is an on-going experiment in the gaming world and it will continue-on probing the limits of what it as a business model can get away with.

If you stand back and look at DLC there is nothing about it whatsoever, no matter how it's presented to you, that is actually beneficial to you as a gamer and consumer. There is nothing beneficial about being able to buy animations at exorbitant prices on release day. DLC is in no way good for gaming and should be shat upon whenever it surfaces.

This of course isnt a reason for me to forego buying the game. The reason I wont buy it right now is based solely on my experience with Portal 1. I thoroughly enjoyed Portal 1, however I played it once through and never touched it again. After hearing the latest one is a mere 7-8 hours of gameplay, it stands to reason I'll wait until it's dirt cheap to buy it.. I'll only play it through once after all.

IMHO that analogy is somewhat flawed in Portal 2's case, even though it applies to many games.

Both things you mentioned offer a benefit for the consumer. The lid prevents spilling of the drink, while the straw makes drinking easier. Also, as you pointed out, your analogy is based on the premise that Portal 2 + DLC is the complete product, which has been split up to generate more profit.

But, the way I see it, and to follow with your analogy: Portal 2 is a drink in a cup with a lid and a straw. You get the full functionality. The DLC is a flashy, funnily shaped straw that might cost a dollar while tha the ordinary straight straw is included for no additional charge, but it is not needed to fully enjoy the drink and have access to the full functionality of the container of the beverage. You pay NOT to get more (or rather NOT to get less), but you pay to get something different. You don't gain any other benefits.

Nicely put Rez and as good as the game sounds, full price is a bit steep for the time I hear it takes to complete. I will definitely wait for a good sale.

I'd say in the case of Portal 2 it's like them handing you the whole cup with lid & straw and offering you smily face shaped ice for an extra 50p.

Yep. This, exactly.

From what I've seen, you're paying for things like the ability of your robot to make different gestures.

WTF? Who actually is buying that stuff? What's the point of it?

When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take back the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What the hell are these?! Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! WITH THE LEMONS! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that BURNS YOUR HOUSE DOWN!

That actually applies to the DLC surprisingly well...

You're going to just have to get the game to figure out WTF he's talking about.

All in good time, my pretty, all in good time.
