I can agree that day 0 DLC is wonky and an attempt to get some extra cashola. But really, so long as Valve puts the money towards HL 3 I sure as heck wouldn't mind helping out. Well, maybe once they announce HL 3 or give some more info on it I wouldn't have a problem with getting some cosmetic doo hickeys. A developer like IW, which doesn't really push the envelope when it comes to game design I wouldn't want to buy extra stuff from. But a developer like Valve I wouldn't mind.

apparently people are still stuck on the mentality from decades ago. modern game developers are not basement dwellers who get payed minimum wage to do innovative and never before done things, for the most part. they do not need your money to keep developing games because they are backed by huge companies, especially in the case of valve. (there are exceptions of course).
this whole "we got to feed the devs" mentality is stupid and the sympathy or rather pity is completely misplaced. these people make a lot more than you.

2 dollars per animation is unacceptable if someone other than valve tried to pull that off. but since it is valve, and they have a huge entrenched community who almost all have the naive mentality i mentioned earlier, valve can get away with it.

one thing that annoys me more than greedy companies whose only objective is to raise the bottom line constantly, are the developers who allow themselves to be used in that manner. they really should have more dignitiy and responsibility to the fans.

Portal 2 does look very interesting, but to be honest I wasn't going to buy it right away anyways... I would personally wait till it was cheaper and on sale. I'm just not a big puzzle game person.

My comments about the DLC (even if its non-essential) had more to do with it being available right away, only one animation per $1.99, and the TREND that it may end up setting. Its a big budget title and not some indie company selling the game at $19.99 and trying to make some extra cash with DLC weeks or months after release. That is all. You don't have to agree, just accept that some people think its wonky. :D

My point is: I'm willing to buy purely cosmetic DLC's like KF's skins to say thank you to developers for upgrading, fixing game and adding brand new free content.

Paying for something what is already in new 50$ game, which I just bought is lame.

Well, the main reason why devs release these kind of DLCs is to make more money. Even TWI did it for that reason. They don't do it to gain approval / thanks from the community. Well, TWI probably also did it out of goodwill for the community because they're cool. But you know what I mean.

I don't understand your second sentence.

And there's no way i'm paying [...] 2 Euro's for a shrugging animation

Sure, maybe you wouldn't, but perhaps others do. Why do you care what other people do with their money? It's their money, if they want to pay $2 for a stupid animation, let them. It doesn't influence you or your gameplay experience in the slightest.

I'll admit that a day 1 DLC is a kind of a bold move, it certainly is. But I don't think they intentionally "removed content from the game" and sell it as DLC. It's just a couple of animations you can use in co-op. I don't think you'll ever miss not having those animations or hats or whatever. It's like the KF skins, you'll still have fun without them.

Ok, I'm almost through SP and Coop MP, and my verdict:

The SP experience is great, so is the MP, and I haven't even opened the DLC store once.
Without buying the DLC, the game still feels "whole", nothing seems to be stripped from it.
Also, if it wasn't for forums, I wouldn't even have known about the store, as it is not advertised in game, ever. So it's not annyoing me with "buy this, buy that" messages (yet).

So, no matter what you think of day 1 DLC and pricey cosmetic addons (both of which I disapprove), they don't interfere in any way with the enjoyment of Portal 2.
If you are against this practice, the most visible sign to Valve would be to buy the game and NOT to buy the DLC.
As they certainly can and do track which user buys what, if there was a huge discrepancy between sold games and users buying DLC, that's something Valve can see and evaluate. If you don't buy it at all though, you send no message to Valve.
But then, even if only a small portion of the users buy the DLC, it would still be profitable, and thus viable for future games, I guess.

So, in conclusion: Buy Portal 2, it's one of the best games of the last 5 years, despite the store.

and the TREND that it may end up setting

TBH this is the biggest part of it.

Is HL3 or Episode 3 going to have a hat store too? Are other devs going to see this cash cow and start adding hat stores to their multiplayer games?

Well, we didn't think horse armor was going to take off but here we are.

All this fuss about 0 day DLC, when it's just some skins/hats/whatever, I don't care about. It's visible in the 2 player Coop, which I do with a friend.
Please wake me up again when there are new levels, which would make me think about paying.

It took 9 years but finally a story driven action game that ties with MAFIA in story telling. They are so different games so can't really pick a winner. In terms of gameplay Portal 2 of course win easy.

Hmm. I just thought of something. Those robots in the game, that appear in the commercials for the game, do they remind anyone else of the Combine Elite soldiers in HL2?

2 bucks for an animation is almost as bad as 15 bucks for 5 maps, which in the past would have been free due to mod tools

imagine the outrage that would ensue on these forums if activision started charging for animations in a SP/co-op game

I don't think it would be much different from the outrage we see already.
and i cannot stress enough that portal two is a great AND complete game, even if you don't purchase anything. The anims are just gimmicks with no gameplay value anyway.

Portal 2 seems pretty interesting but honest, all this makes me wonder and a bit worried, really, first l4d2, valves rapid expansion to consoles, more and more overpriced dlc, accidental bugs on pc that seems like leftovers from console and this all with big price tags. Meh, I dont have a lot of money and money is tight at the moment, maybe I will get the game when it's on a huge sale for very, very cheap, otherwise, Valve aint gonna get any money for this out of me.
