There are all kinds of strategies. We already have AR's and AK's per member of the household, plus scoped bolt rifles, shotguns and handguns. A PCC fills a different niche. It is very light (hollow plastic with a long barrel pistol inside) and dirt cheap to shoot. 19 cents per round versus 35 cents for 5.56 or 73 cents per round of 6.8 Rem. 5.7mm ammo is nearly unobtainium.

5.7 is expensive for a pistol round but its listed for a decent price on:

Wow, they just put that up. CTD was exactly where I was getting prices for my post and when I looked for 5.7, the search found nothing in stock.
That is a decent price too - roughly 50 cents per bang.

The game's balance made it burst/semi only. If it is fully automatic then commando players will not have sufficient motion to upgrade to a L85.
In addition, fast clicking in burst mode will have little difference between F/A. I did it loads of times in a row of clots/cysts/bloats/any trash zed, and it did well.

Choosing a AR15 as a starting weapon surprises me, because it is an EXPENSIVE weapon in the real world!
I imagined that the starting weapon of the commando to be a Beretta M93if a 3-round burst is needed, and a Glock 18C if F/A. Both are automatic pistols which fires 9mm rounds.

Anyway, I thought that what TWI needs to do is to STOP the shooting in burst firing mode whenever the player RELEASES the trigger. It is iffy to shoot the remaining ammo when the trigger is released, just as someone previously mentioned.

The A2 burst mechanism is really pretty awful though. Resetting the trigger doesn't reset the burst mechanism. So if you fire one or two rounds and let go of the trigger, the next pull will only shoot out the rest of of the burst - with a terrible trigger pull to boot.
That's true, non-resetting cam burst fire control groups are annoying.
But I'm sure horzine could figure out how to get a resetting cam in an AR.

First off the 9mm AR15 is a gimmick at best, why someone would take a rifle and throw a pistol round in it AND IT STILL WEIGHS AND HANDLES LIKE AN ASSAULT RIFLE and use it in combat is beyond me. There are much better SMGs that fire 9mm or other pistol rounds.

Second 9mmAR-15s are NOT popular at all among civilians. The parts are expensive and its not that simple to take a .223 AR-15 and change it to a 9mm AR-15. Do people have them? Yes, but its not its native cartridge.

I'd much rather have an HK SMG or a CZ Scorpion than an AR15 in a pistol round.

Look, the point is, the one we have now not only fits the game from a balance perspective, it fits it in a theme perspective, too.

Balance wise, the starting rifle is not supposed to be what you want to keep using. As I said before, if you don't have a bullpup, or better, by wave 4, you're either one hell of a good shot with the AR-15 or you have a death wish. The AR-15 is really only any good for dealing with the lower-level trash zeds, and it should stay that way. If it was good for everything (for instance, if it was chambered in a bigger calibre and had a full-auto setting) then there'd be little to no point in investing money in anything below the SCAR.

Theme wise, it fits the bill because the 9mm variant is often used - again - in urban and suburban environments to minimize collateral damage. There are many police and law enforcement agencies that specifically avoid larger, more powerful cartridge sizes because they are so powerful. When it's your job to protect people, it's kind of hard to carry wound a firearm that could easily punch through the wall of a house and kill somebody's aunt in the next room over should you happen to miss.

Remember, we're not out in some sandtrap fighting terrorists who are armed to the teeth with the best in late-war soviet tech. We're fighting in urban Paris, in a training facility, and in science lab. The only guns you're likely to find lying around on the floor, as it were, are going to be weapons used by security and enforcement firms.

Horzine likely has (or had) its own private security force with their own loadout. Giving them a 9mm AR-15 would make sense, because that way they could deal with any escaped or violent specimens fairly easily while still not having to worry about a stray round punching through the walls and plugging their boss.

Simply put, we can argue about this all day, but the devs have given us what they've given us. Personally, I think the twist on what we normally see is a good thing, I like using the AR-15's 9mm variant in the game because we've not seen many, if any, games that have gone out on a limb to use one like that.

Saying we need a full-auto starting rifle in a bigger cartridge would make the bullpup and likely some of the upcoming guns rather pointless.

The Colt SMG is really not that strange when you consider that it has similar dimensions and weight to the older MP5's.

The idea that 9mm overpenetrates less than .223 isn't entirely backed up by science, but that really doesn't matter if people in charge believe it anyway ;) .223 can have issues out of a short barrel though.

Point is, it's a thing! A great choice for this game.

well put...

pretty much...we need a rifle...because thats what commando does from his theme....its just chambered for 9mm so its low damage makes sense

it is ohnestly my favorite starting weapon...along with mossberg...but moosberg comes with 8/16 shots...whereas AR15 with 20(or30)/100...a good shot will do more with AR15 in 1st wave....and it is well baalnced that the bullpup is a go-to weapon for 2nd wave (and yes you are supposed to sell the empty AR15)...or at the very least refill AR15 and get bullpup on wave 3.

whoever skips bullpup and rushes AK12...well thats your problem....most people go for bullpup and then rush scar...

By God I swear. You should quit posting random comments without reading. If you're so damn smart, well please, read the replies below where me myself and others explained about 9mm usage. No one said it's not an option to put it 9mm bullets, yet people don't normally shoot from 9mm AR-15 and all cartridges I listed are correct. If you look at it like that- you can find most likely any assault rifle with a 9mm clip. But question is- why use it? 9mm clips fit smg great, as they are less bulky and don't slow you down as assault rifle do. So please, don't throw random links with clips.
To prove what I've said above here's an AK with 9mm clip:
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Molot-Vepr-9mm-AK-Carbine.jpg
Who uses them? No one, as it's still a fat, bulky assault rifle, yet not that long as AR-15.

whatever way you cut it 9mm is a fantastic close range soft target round, I like having a 9mm carbine with that little stick mag, feels like a tier 1 weapon should.

I would love to see you shooting AR-15 9mm round vs a Vector k10 with his insanely high rpm+ .45 ACP rounds.

I've never fired an SMG, let alone full auto. .45 ACP sounds like the nuts though.

In terms of a soft target at close range though I'm sure the target wouldn't be able to tell the difference, unless they're still alive.

Well. Just compare these two numbers: 90 rounds per min (Theoretical 800 RPM, but it would destroy AR-15 into pieces after a minute of usage) and 1200 RPM. The damage you deal per second with Kriss Vector is way higher, as it goes through his mag in around 3 secs.

Indeed, and I know the .45 round is a larger meaner animal, and could make someone sit down where a 9mm couldn't.

Buut out of 90rpm and 1200rpm, only 1 or 2 of those need to slam home to put your soft target out of commission. Technically you'll be a force to be reckoned with when you're rocking either.

That being said I'd choose a .45 handgun over a 9mm, despite the reduced capacity. I just can't turn down bigger bullets or more stopping power.

EDIT: I said handgun just because I can tell the difference between single shots better and appreciate how everything feels more.

Tripwire isn't going for full realism seeing as how fire selection causes the AK-12 to magically shoot faster.

I know this has already been answered, but it is realistic. In real life AK-12 has 650 rpm RoF in full auto and 1000 rpm in burst fire.

It's not even the most extreme example of RoF differences between fire modes. AN-94 fires 600 rpm in full auto and 1800 rpm in burst.

Yea some of those russian guns pre-feed the 2nd bullet for quicker 2-shot burst.

Do you even know what you are talking about?

All M4A1 in use by the US military are full auto capable.

I said M4 not M4A1, get some glasses if you can't tell the difference between 2 characters and 4.

The Russians do have an AK in 9mm, it's called the Vityaz and it's cool.
