I like KF and i play all the classes (my lowest is lvl3 Commando and my highest is level 5 Medic), and i enjoyed leveling every class - except the Commando.
The reason i despise leveling Commando is only because of the horrible requirement to kill huge numbers of Stalkers with Commando's rifles.
It is boring, it is based on random luck of running into Stalkers and being the first to kill them, it takes way way too much time to get all the needed kills, and it can only be done with commando rifles - meaning you probably wont be gaining Stalker kills with Rifles if you are not playing a Commando at that time.

I got some suggestions to lessen how horrible leveling Commando is:

  • 1. Reduce the number of killed stalkers needed for all perk levels by at least 50% OR
  • 2. Allow ANY weapon to be used to kill Stalkers, so that players can get a bit of Comm's Stalker kills while playing other classes OR
  • 3. Remove Stalker requirement and add something else, or just leave the "damage done with Rifles" as the only requirement.
I have heard many complaints from pretty much every Commando player about this Stalker kills with Rifles requirement - a lot of them going so far to say they absolutely HATE it and that they abandoned playing Commando because of it.
I always end up having enough "Rifle damage done" to complete even the NEXT perk level - but i utterly lack Stalker kills to get even the current perk level done.

A lot of people suggest that Commando players download custom maps that spawn a ton of Stalkers and farm them in that way, or that they just play an insane amount of specific Solo maps to get that Stalker kill count up.
However i think custom maps/solo are a horrible band-aid fix to a horrible issue that plagues all leveling Commandos - TWI should either fix the Stalker kill requirement or completely remove it.

EDIT: ***************************************

A solution to Stalker farm was suggested to me over at these forums.

Download a map on the steam workshop for killing floor under the name
Testmap6p FiringRangeV2.
Leveling perks on this map works 100% fine, do NOT use any mutators since one of them could be preventing perk leveling.

Really simple: you buy whatever you want, approach one the white-panels where the name of the zombie you want is written - and press E to spawn one of those zombies. Spam E for a lot of those zombies.

Got my commando stalker requirement in very short time.
Played this map solo for about 30 minutes, beginner difficulty just to massacre stalkers.

I didn't have a hard time leveling my commando to 6. It was actually my first level 6 perk. I was never short on stalkers except from 5-6 which I needed about 100 or 200 of them at the end (already had the damage). Then again I always played commando when I first started out so maybe that's why I had so many stalkers and not too much damage. Honestly I find the firebug and demo to be the hardest to level but I think that's because I hate playing them. >_>;

Stalkers are easy if you know where to look. I reached 3600 Stalkers when I was around 4.5 million damage. Just listen for them.

I'm not going to lie, I hated the stalker requirements. Absolutely loathed them. But I think having the stalker requirements helps teach you how to play Commando in a way. It shows you to keep a lookout for trash among the big things; and becuse of the requirements, you level up considerably slower and therefore play Commando for longer when levelling up. In that time you should have learnt the right from the wrong as far as how to play it goes. Kind of a double edged sword. I'd advise you not to worry about the requirements, and just play the game for fun. Maye take an AK with you for Crawlers and Stalkers when you go Zerk? If you just play the game, you will find it much more enjoyable than constantly chcking how much more you have to level.

I agree.

Focus more on mastering the role of the class you're playing than leveling your perks--you'll be a much better player for it.

Whatever the change ends up being, it really needs to happen right now.

Commando leveling not only takes BY FAR the longest - it is just a horrible gameplay experience to get like 6 stalkers per wave out of the 5000 you need...

What? Are you playing on beginner/normal difficulty? Nothing needs changing but the way you see how the game apparently needs to be. Only people who complain are those who don't see how the perk should be played, i.e. people who complain about welding requirement on Support Specialist too.You have them bonuses for a reason on the perk, stop complaining.

It feels long, but if you play Commando for any appreciable amount of time, you'd find that they level just as fast as the other perks if you play your perks right. ( In fact, I would say that the Sharpshooter requirement is a bit on the low side. )

Just play the role, and stop worrying about levelling. You will have a lot more fun that way.

Actually, welding requirement for support is worse. Requires you to participate in some boring camp games.

-Tell your teammates to save stalkers for you. Most of them will understand.
-Be around stalker/crawler spawn points.
-Play other perks and have a rifle as a secondary weapon.

I have heard many complaints from pretty much every Commando player about this Stalker kills with Rifles requirement - a lot of them going so far to say they absolutely HATE it and that they abandoned playing Commando because of it.

And nothing of value was lost.

With recent changes to map white listing, if you have a stalker problem its easily remedied. I would recommend you learn the game mechanics for your class. Being a lvl6 noob is embarrassing.

There's a couple of maps with certain points where Stalkers spawn; learning those spots and hanging near them will help a lot. Also it's already been stated but I shall reiterate; you definitely can increase your Stalker kill count when not playing Commando, you just need to be using a Commando weapon.

By doing this, you not only become a better commando (one who knows how to hold back the trash and where it's most likely to spawn), but you'll accumulate stalker kills much faster.

If you know the stalkers are spawning from a vent in the ceiling, then as a Commando you should be utilizing your strengths in a way that provides the most benefit to the team. It may sound obvious, but once again it comes down to learning and playing to your role on a team.

There are a ton of stalkers in the game. Most people hate it because it can't be power leveled easily.

No reduction needed. There are a ton of them in the game. Simply shoot them. Once you stop counting every single one, they'll add up.
No, you can't use the M32 or shotguns to kill them by spamming everything.
No reason to change the leveling requirements by adding crawlers instead. Everyone who comes up with that idea thinks that it's original.

The commando is just about perfectly balanced and should be left alone.

I dont know wether the requirements should be lowered or not but let me just say that I absolutely hated having to hunt down stalkers especially when teammates kept killing them before you. In fact I had my commando at level 5 for months after all my other perks were level 6 simply because I didnt feel like competing with the kills. And its not like you can just tell everyone to leave the stalkers for you if they are also low level commandos and need them as well.

I hope the sequel will have a better leveling system (if one at all).

You should rarely (if ever) have more than one Commando in a game.
