Honestly, the more I read about Relaxed realism mode and unlocks the more I realize I'll probably never play on those servers, not for a prolonged time at least. I'm going to play it to see how long it takes to unlock certain things and to find out how rare the rarities really are, just to see what it's like. But other than that, I'll stick to realism servers.

might as well add a crosshair and make it optional, yay options!

ArmA 2 has optional crosshairs and is still realistic, yet you don't seem to mind that. Not that I'd want crosshairs in RO of course.

From what I understand you can't use equipment which you haven't unlocked on custom servers. So no bayonets and no 72 round drum mag in custom servers unless you unlocked them on ranked first.

Well, I certainly hope not. That would kinda defeat the purpose of server customization wouldn't it? I'm not looking forward to having to grind for standard issue equipment...

More information about custom server settings is really needed by now, people are confused. So far TWI has only shown Relaxed realism and the Trollkarabiner (oh, what a great word Oldih :D). An idea for the next dev blog, perhaps?

I dont want to play the game because I want to unlock a certain items like a bayonet (which is pretty BS for a realistic game that follows a historical context), I want to play it because i want to have fun and experience what the gameplay has to offer. Otherwise, we get COD and are incentivated to play by having a lot of either standard issue, or meaningless crap to unlock.

Well, I'm not quite sure. None of us know exactly what Realism mode will be like because TWI hasn't released a whole lot of information about that yet. You could be right, maybe the only difference is the HUD... but I wouldn't call it Realism mode then, not if the unlock and ranking systems are still there.

Perhaps the real Realism mode is Custom mode then? Wouldn't that be really confusing, when it comes to server settings / filters? How are we supposed to find servers that have ranking disabled and realistic loadouts enabled?

Come on TWI, shine a light here...

AFAIK disabling unlocks, ranking, and heroes will make it show up in the custom filter, alongside "Knighted's all hero, all mkb, 24/7 64 player on 16player danzig ultra slugfest server".

I think the servers can still disable them though.

So for players like you and I, we would have to set up a filter to the following:

Realism mode + Disabled unlocks + Disabled "rare weapons". I doubt we'll have many server options to choose from though. And that is assuming the filter system works as I hope it does. Other wise, as you said, we'll be looking under "Custom" and still have to search through all of the arcade servers.

From what we know, the Realism mode does indeed have all the same ranking and unlock stuff as the "Standard (relaxed realism)" mode, just less HUD stuff, and things like Recon planes wont be as effective and such. So yes, if we want realism, propper guns and all, we will need to go "Custom".

Problem is though, Custom is not a realism mode, it's a custom mode, it will contain every server config that differs from the Ranked servers, be it more or less realistic, it all gets lumped in there in one big pile.


This is why many of us want a "RO-Classic" mode, that will mirror the sort of gameplay and setup we loved from the mod and Ost, so thouse of us who have been fans of the game for years now can still find the gameplay we fell in love with.
Sadly though, that plea seems to be falling on deaf ears so far, and we will allmost certainly have to go dumpster-diving in the Custom section to find servers that remind us of Ost.

It all sounds so bad.. having to mod the game and all just to get the original Red Orchestra experience (that made the game so unique and fun) from RO2. At this rate, RO3 would basically be COD WAW.

I actually find it pretty hard to believe that there would be so little difference between relaxed and realism. Until we know for sure, I will hope that realism is an RO-Classic mode. If we are told this is not the case, I will vocalize my disagreements and hope the game is patched :IS2:

Well, I am assuming that TWI will give us plenty of server filters like checkboxes for the recon plane, HUD, ranking, rarities etc. Lumping everything under the 'Custom' section would be a bad idea indeed.

I agree, a Classic mode would be nice.

It's a bit weird though that server admins have to customize the hell out of their server, and that the players have to uncheck all kinds of filters, just to access realism mode. Why not make Realism mode the realism mode? Much easier and less confusing.

I think it would be funny if TWI added a cross-hair that just came up with iron sights, and was pinned to the front leaf. In other words, adding no functionality, but just to satisfy people who want it as an option.

even though it would have no functionality.. I guarantee a sh*tstorm would brew up on these forums :D

How about you guys just let it be until you can actually play the game, then go ahead and cry about it.
Since when is expressing opinions and concerns "crying"?

The whole point of speaking about things like this now, instead of when the game is already out, is that TWI takes not of these concerns and maybe does something about it, or at least responds to the questions raised.

I hate to have my 2 first posts be about the same topic, but it's really bugging me.
The whole progression system just looks to me like a (unsuccessful) grab for an additional audience.
Nobody will buy this game for the unlocks. Nobody. 99% of the newcomers for RO are interested in the cover system, the attention to detail and the tactical gameplay, NOT some bizarre desire to unlock things.
I'm damn sure the progression system is discouraging more people (both newcomers and oldtimers) than it is attracting. I'm sure I speak for most of the RO crowd when I say I just want to play the game without constantly thinking about my score, and without being denied standard issue equipment at the beginning. I bet there will be many uneasy feelings when you kill or get killed by someone because of a progression related factor.
Sadly it's just one and a half months to release, no chance of change now. I fear this could be downright game breaking if unlockable gear cannot be used on custom servers.
