When my friend first started telling me about Red Orchestra and how it had tanks, realistic combat, and a hole asortment of weapons. The first thing I asked him was if it had planes.. I was sad to hear it didn't.

Personally I would be addicted to Red orchestra or even if they made a Darkest Hour/American mod with planes. It overall would be a better game, in the midst of combat have a P-47 'Thunderbolt' or a P-51 'Lightning' fly over head, unleashing a bombardment of rockets, and tracers.

However, call me picky but i would like to FLY the planes, by giving this idea i don't meen have a Radioman of sorts like in the Darkest Hour mod calling in a computer AI or just a model, I meen calling in on a radio using either microphone command, or just regular voice commands telling a fighter/bomber flown by a actual ingame player to bombard, strafe, or gain air-superiority over a certain grid point on the ingame map.

I honestly think it would make the newest Red Orchestra more popular and especially if they made a American mod for the newest RO. However it would include more work into the game and for that reason I can understand if it is not included. If you have read atleast this far I thank you for your time and from the date that I posted this,
Merry Christmas

I would like to see airplanes but not human controlled.

Simply because for proper realistic simlike aircombat maps would need to be too big for the amount of players.

If you want planes just grab simulator. Air strikes are working simple:

1. Traveling to target zone - hours of flying
2. Combat action in zone - bombers drop bombs, dive bombers do it too and etc. In conclusion its only 5% of fly time.
3. Traveling back to base - hours of flying.

If we talking about planes in game like RO it could be done only by spawning of planes in air. If plane deplete ammo (bombs, bullets ... ) its useless, planes dont have plenty of ammo.

I am not talking that its impossible to implement it but its like moving of mountain. Its not general machines they move by speed of +200 km per hour, imagine latency and required upload to communicate with game server. Also map size would be too big for fps game.

However it seems it would be great if they implement it with success of efficiency. But I am afraid that its to hard to develop something like this in RO.

It could be good to see something like artillery strikes by NPC planes.

Grab IL-2. Realistic infantry combat, somewhat realistic tank combat, and arcadey flying does not mix well.

Unless the maps are 50 kilometers or so, the flying would be arcadey. And I doubt the maps will be at least 50 km.

Which is pretty much what i said :p

Thats why i would prefer some bot controlled/scripted planes that occasionally just go out of the skybox or whatever and occasionally show up to dive bomb something for the atmosphere like random arty.

Basically, we need giant maps in order to implement planes.

UE3 is not the engine for that.

UE3 can work with giant maps, I doubt that would be the issue. Even UE2 can work with large maps (take the lineage2 mmorpg as an example).

Its rather that the issue comes with handling the amount of players that are needed with large maps (netcode wise).

I don't think I've ever seen a map bigger than Fallout 3's in UE3. And that would be tiny for aircraft.

Sure, it might be able to handle maps 4-6 times the size of FO3's, but it would probably need a lot of tweaking. Would be better to make an engine from the start that better supports large areas with lower amounts of detail.

Well i believe it got a good lod system and because the engine is on the consoles it actually got a streaming system. Aka so you can load pieces of land on the go without loading zones.

So i think that theorethically nearly infinite sized maps would be a possibility. There are actually mmorpgs being developed on the engine as well. If you read the papers UE3 can do quite a lot of thingies.

However indeed to make the game work with 200+ players in current time concessions would need to be made to optimize performance and bandwidth stuff. However i wonder if it would be worse than other engines.

woo, I see, and what is Chek now? The broken heart of Europe? :p

my dad is from Slovenia, the spleen? of Europe... :p

anyways back on topic, I think planes would be fun, but I also don't feel that it's what RO is about at its core... i think it would be a different game...but it would rock none of the less
