Going on a similar trip myself this summer, though I'm staying in Western Europe, and going alone unfortunately (or maybe not).

Anyways, if you have the time, I'd make the trip to Berchesgaten (sp?) while in Munich. It's not too far away, and there is a company that does tours once or twice a week to the Eagles Nest, maybe more. I know I plan on going.

My grandfather went on a tour of Berchtesgaden back about 1945 ... had some interesting souvenirs from that trip.

Anne Frank's Museum in Amsterdam.

Some very interesting stuff there, i've been there once a whole lot of years ago, when we were still in elementary school.
A lot of info on how it was to live like that, hiding for everybody in a small room in the back of some house, and ofcourse lots of information about the holocaust as well.
I remember a shocking picture of a massgrave at some concentration camp too.
Basically the museum consists of the house they lived in, with lots of exhibits in their rooms. There is still stuff from Anne lying around or scribbled over the wall i believe.

from a Canadian point of view, I'd probably recommend Vimy Ridge and Dieppe, the former being the site of perhaps Canada's greatest victory and the latter being the site of it's bloodiest battle, and largely responsible for the tactics on D-Day.

That aside you could probably spend a lifetime touring all the places of interest in Europe from the World Wars.

Also, head for the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme. See how many of your relatives (and mine) you can find listed there. Look across the Somme battlefields and try and imagine walking across those ridiculous flat areas in "good order", while the Hun machine-guns you!
I noticed that, even though my name is fairly un-English sounding, theres so many names on it there was quite a few up there. And the computers in the information center showed that a few where from west bromich, where my family is originally from. Well worth a visit, even if you have to go a bit out of your way to get there.
