Anyone else planning to play this, or are playing the beta?
http://www.burningsea.com/

Now, I've never been an MMORPG fan, but this looks too cool to miss. After playing Pirates on the C64 this is what we wished Pirates would be like back then.

Hopefully it will be different than WoW and otherss, less mindless huntinh for XP and stuff like that.

Thinking of preordering, just wondering what others here think this looks?

BTW, what's wrong with these tags, it says "Game/span>", someone forgot to close a tag somewhere??

Dunno if it's worth the monthly fee... I am invited to the beta, but didn't have the time to download the client yet and try it out.

On a sidenote: for a quick singleplayer pirates fix, try Age of Pirates by Akella. That game rocks.

Yeah this looks really cool.. especially the swordfighting. But man, I have a really hard time paying a monthly fee to play a game. For the most part because I never feel like I'm getting my moneys (monies?) worth. My one and only experience with a subscription MMO being a quick jaunt into Star Wars Galaxies - which, as I'm sure some of you know, is just a boring as hell grindfest. I played SWG for the first couple of months after it came out but quickly realized it was WORK and not really that much fun. Thats where my skepticism comes from.

Shaddy if you get burning sea let us know how it is.

I just pre-ordered it, so yea, will tell you when I play. Seems I have to register at some sucky Sony site to play though, which sucks... but I'm still hoping it will be fun to play.

Yea, Im sceptical myself to the 'work' aspect of MMOs, but I can afford the fee, at least for a couple of months, and this will be the first I try so we will see.

Got the Retail version so now Im waiting for it to pop into my mailbox :)

Played right through the open beta. We now have a new guild for it , "Raiders of the Bloody Bush" , with a number of members all set to go live on the pre-launch on the 7th. Great game , and the only true MMO to come out this year (I think). Has the same depth as WOW, and then some. If your into running around killing in a box, this may not be for you. But if you like the long term strategy, economy, mision based stuff..you'll really like it!

Well what I dont like about most MMO's is the 'grind' you need to go through in order to participate in most things and the inevitable power hungry players who buy 4 accounts and have three of the accounts running on macros building up the one leftover account so on and so forth.. if it's just adventure on the high seas then it looks like it could be a lot of fun. But the power levelers and megaguilds that plague MMO's just kill it for me. Nothing worse than adventuring around and seeing an avatar sitting there power-leveling.. you know the person isnt even sitting at their PC. In the end though, it's a monthly fee I can't sink my teeth into.

It was just another MMO.

What? Dude, its like Pirates, only in 3D and ON TEH INTERNETS!!1 How can you go wrong with that? :D
Pirates are awesome btw. Yarr.

But seriously, it's the "grind" I'm mostly worried about too, too much of it and the game feels like WORK, not playing.

blkmgc - are there many repetitive tasks to build XP? Have you played WoW and can compare it to that? Also, what's the maturity of people playing?

Haven't ran into any grind as of yet. The gameplay offers as little or as much depth as you would like. If you like sailing around getting into scraps without working on your inventory, that cool. Just avoid large groups, stay out of PVP areas, and pick fights with similar vessels/ ranks. If you'd like to get full tilt into a society that manufactures its own armor, heavy shot, ect. Thats cool too. And it can be as complicated as you yourself setting up a factory or warehouse and doing it, or as simple as you turning over your Oak planks, logs, iron ingots ect that you capture in fights or trade for, and benefiting from someone else in your society doing it. But make no mistake, there is no "siting around leveling up". It simply doesnt work that way.

I have not played WOW, but many =db= members have. This is the first XP based game thats captured my attention. And for good reason I'm told, as it not only offers the simplistic style play with little reward, OR it offers a much deeper quest/ mission/ economy style gameplay than WOW. The ingame XP challenges seem ok. They dont get to repetitive. The best XP you get is working with others and taking trade convoys, causing unrest in ports ect.

Also, what's the maturity of people playing?
Inherently, the complexities of the game itself do not lend favoritism to the 1337 crowd. Most players I have ran into ingame are , funny enough, mostly our age range (40'ish) and are pretty decent folks. If your looking for good company to keep, find a group that has same interests, styles ect and get on voice with them and work together. Thats where this game really shines imho.

This has caught my eye for some bizarre reason, as I normally don't like MMO's & I especially don't like paying a monthly fee, BUT... I like the sound of the concept.

Can someone who's actively playing this update me/us with how its going?
