Instead of making him immune i say make him able to get rid of pipebombs/avoid them like in WTFmod.
he does that in WTF? how does it work?
Nobody ever places pipes whenever I play WTFmod, so Ive never seen it done.

In the newest version the hatriarch uses his "evil eye" to zap pipes and sticky grenades thus rendering them ineffective.he does that in WTF? how does it work?

Misspelled. I forgot to add the e. It's Hateriarch.Dr Octopopalis? (if thats how you spell it)
And does he waer a hat, and is therefor called "the hatriarch"? or is that just a misspelling? with wtfmod, you never know.
My take on it:
The max limit could be like 2x for non-demos, 8x for level 6 demos. Then, if that limit is reached, you cannot lay any more pipes down. And like Sammers said: "and have the number currently armed by that player displayed where the flashlight/medic syringe bar is", that's a great addition to this.
The proximity should stay indeed, but ALSO add remote control. The remote detonation triggers one pipe per time pressed, from first to last ofc. To put down more than those 2x / 8x, your previous ones has to be destroyed in some way, which the remote control can help with, or you could also pick them up again (optional addition though, imo), but that should take a little moment to do so (a few seconds). Cannot pick up more if you are full obviously, and only your own ofc(Your own bombs could blink blue, and others' red?)
Then have the remote control weigh that 1 weight, where the pipebombs are the ammo, sorta. That way, even if you drop all bombs, you can still get more of them from ammo boxes, and you won't lose the 1 weight if you drop them all either (you have to throw away the remote control like any other weapon for that to happen)
If you have the pipebombs + remote "weapon" in your hands, this could be the controls:
Primary fire = Lay pipebomb
Secondary fire = Disarm and pick up pipebomb (only works on your own)
Reloading = Remote detonation (one press = one bomb)
That way, you limit the amount of pipes max on the map at one time, but does not gimp the Demolition perk too much either!![]()

Thought I might add, you can already remote detonate your pipe bombs. Its called a pistol
Personally I prefer the idea that the number of pipe bombs you can have at any instant is your perks limit. If you have a maximum of 8, and have 4 active pipes, you can only hold 4 in your inventory.
You must play on FF servers a lot. Yes, they can explode when you shoot them on a FF server, but you could literally drop a nuke on one in a non FF server and it wouldn't go off.

Imo, pipes aren't really that unbalanced. If the game seems easy, it's due to the new perk levels and tier 3 weapons.
