Perks Glitched!

My friend joined my game, and he died on the first round, then when he respawned all his perks were identical to mine, same level, damage etc.

He doesn't care because I'm high level (6 Sharpshooter, 6 Support Specialist, 5 Berserker) on a few perks.

But I care because I don't wanna play with him if he's using really high perks that he hasn't earnt, 'cause he'll be hogging all the kills (which I'm perfectly fine with, if he earnt the perk).

What can I/he/we do about this?

I wouldn't make him go level 0, that would be unfair.

He's considering using the well-known way of 'hacking' perks to make them what they were before.

But is there no legitimate way?

I contacted Tripwire on Steam forums and apparantly it's a rare glitch which can happen, so you can effectively lose all your perks if you got "swapped" with a 6xlvl0 :/
