Hi,
I'm sure there a few of us here who want to upgrade their old PC to one that can comfortably run RO2 and the mods that are bound to come out for it and will probably push the limit.

My problem is that I haven't been keeping up with hardware and hardware trends so with the confusing labels the hardware industry likes to put on their stuff it's near impossible for me to judge what is a good piece of hardware and what isn't without looking up a review for every single piece.

So, I think it would make for a nice sticky if people who are in the know could post some possible PC variants in different price classes. I'd love to take the first step, but I'm one of those who would benefit from such a topic...

I have around 750

I like this thread. I'm definitely due for an upgrade, but I haven't paid attention to computer hardware at all in the last 5 years...

Somebody should write an app/php page in which you put in the amount of money you want to spent and the tool recommends you the parts.

I always use the shopping guides from gaming magazines (Gamestar.de for example). Worked well in the past.

I need a whole new tower, including everything in it. So hard drive yes, but monitor no.

As for spending it all, I don't want to blow cash on getting five frames more with 16x AA or a couple of points in a some insane benchmark.
I just want current games to run well at high details and I don't want to have to upgrade again when a cool game comes out in two years.
If that's doable for less, I'm all ears.

As I said, I've been pretty out of the whole hardware scene for quite a while. Last time I was really knowledgeable was around the Geforce 2 to 4 times and then again a little bit when I bought my current PC which originally had a 6600GT... So it's been a while.
I have no clue what stuff costs these days.

Try with a 1155 Core i5 Sandy Bridge 2500k and a Radeon 6950, you can go 4 or 8 gigs of RAM (I haven't found anything yet that requires more than 4).

That would be my choices if I had to buy a computer today with that budget.

I like Federov's approach. Get a good solid working standard and it'll last you for years and won't break the bank. I'll be pricing something here in the near future. I"m trying to decide upon i5 or i7. Hyperthreading or no?

I've learned the hard way over the years buying the newest, best, fastest whatever is simply throwing good money down the drain. Games and software that take advantage of the new technology always lag behind. I'm fortunate in that I do have disposable income, but I'm done chasing after the newest thing to come out.

The Phenoms are already dropping in prices and even if you don't want a new bulldozer CPU (the fastest will be around 220€) the prices will probably keep falling.

However any 750€ PC (or even much less) will run RO2 on high settings and will run other games on high settings too. I doubt the next two years will see a new console from Sony or Microsoft. So you will have a future proof PC.

Check this page out.. http://www.geforce.com/#/Optimize/Guides/hardware-buyers-guide

There will be a little drop down menu in there.. go to mid-range monster. It's a nice PC for a good price. I was looking at it last night.

In fact.. I need to upgrade my PC or I wont be able to play HOES. I figure there's tens of thousands of members on this forum, if even a portion of you send me a dollar each I could reach $650 bucks for an upgrade with no sweat. How about it? :D

Well it depends on your upgrade plan.

The current 2600k and 2500k are in an end of socket time, so there wont be upgrading those cpu's to better ones in a few years. ( Price wise these are good buys though )

for AMD currently you can get a good 4 or 6 core phenom for a good deal ( better $ to dollar then K series, however no gpu ). Me personally I am waiting for the llano series which will have gpu + 6 cores, its also likely that you will be able to x fire that apu with your video card.
Meaning you could buy a good priced 6000 series amd and xfire it with the apu for even more power.

Afaik the K series apu's cannot be combined with either nvidia or ati cards. ( but heck, when it comes to buying new computers always delay as much as possible, deals only get better ).

A lot of sites have good deals on 6-12 gig kits of ddr3 ram, I would definitely pick one of these, the larger the better, newer games are just going to take more advantage of ram.

In terms of HDD's I would go with a raid ( zero i think ) with two faster HDD's for the OS & Games ( This will increase read times by a fair bit )

Lastly buy a good PSU, I spend ~ 300 $ on my psu 5 years ago, it puts out 60 Amps on the 12 v rails ( two of them ) and has not yet died.

I might be able to play RO2 on low with my current computer, but will most likely buy a new one. Thinking of an i5, 8 GB ram and a GTX 560ti. Trying to not spend too much money on it, and I really don't like ATI cards ^^.

I still have a 5 year old Core 2 Duo 1.8 ghz with 4Gb (3Gb with XP) and a 9800GTX+ (my Ati 1950XTX died this year)

And based on the story with UE3 games in general, I'm fairly confident that I'll run HOES just fine in medium with some high settings @ 1680 x 1050.

So no need to upgrade mine yet. I'm almost certain that it'll die before I really need to upgrade, and I didn't spend more then 800

Core 2 quad 2.8Ghz, and a Nvidia GTX580, which is is insane compared to the cpu... I guess my biggest worry is only 4GB ram and still running 32bit XP, which limits the max memory a process can get. Also no Dx11 :(

Upgrade to Win7 is in the plans, sometime in autumn I guess, when I can be arsed to do the job.

I have around 750€ give or take and it would be cool if that would get me a decent PC.
Since no one has directly answered that yet...

I just built a couple of new machines just to play with some new parts.

I'll assume by upgrade you meant the PC using your existing monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. Add / subtract as needed for parts you might be able to reuse (e.g. case).

The smallest came to ~$1150 US, right around

I'm guessing I should be able to run ROHOS on medium or slightly better settings with my current 3 1/2 yr old rig.

However, after the game comes out I plan on doing a new build. I will look at what is top of the line and then scale the parts back a few notches and see if the price is ok :D

Leaving aside cases and all the other secondary bull**** I'd say the core of a good gaming system now would be;

- Core i5 2500 (standard or k if you envisage overclocking in the future)
- 6-8GB fast RAM
- Good enthusiast level motherboard (there are so many that I won't even pretend to choose one)

The new sandybridge i5's offer so much bang for so little buck that it is staggering, I would not even consider any other CPU right now. As to the GPU that's where you can either scrimp or pay a little more, my options from dirt cheap to expensive would be;

- GTX 460
- GTX 560 Ti
- GTX 570

Any of those cards should put you in good stead for HoS and most new games, my one caveat is I'd stay the **** away from the super clocked 560 cards as more and more reports of them suffering issues are surfacing on the internet (regardless of manufacturer). I'll admit I'm an Nvidia fanboy, so I won't try to recommend any ATI cards, this aside I'm pretty sure that Nvidia are killing them in terms of power consumption, heat performance and die size right now.

I just got a GTX 570 last month and was suprised after having a 10.5 inch long GTX 260 that Nvidia cards are back down to the ~6-7inch size of the 8800 series. Whereas ATI are still constructing 10.5 inch long monsters that make cable management and case choice a *****.

Personally all said and done my specs right now are;

- Q9450
- 6GB DDR800
- GTX 570

I can run every game I've tried on highest or damn close to it, I'll see how HoS goes on this setup before I make any hardware decisions. If I do have to upgrade I'll only be looking at about $400 for an i5 2500/RAM/MB combo so I'm not worried at all.

I'm definitely gonna have to build an entirely new PC. I've been meaning to for a while & now HoS is the kick in the *** I needed.

Tripwire's done it again!
