There are some things to keep in mind when deciding what you want for your servers.

  • VAC does mass bans, but, not immediately. Rather it takes two weeks for a cheater to be banned.
  • Punkbuster does "Live" banning where the cheater gets removed from the server via PB's 2 minute kick. PBBans enforces the ban so the cheat stays off the server as long as it is streaming to PBBans.
  • Punkbuster issues Global Bans which keep players off all PB enabled servers permanently.
  • Punkbuster issues Hardware Bans for certain violations, although this is more rare. If you are hardware banned, then you would need a new modem, IP address, new PC and new game.
So, it is all up to the server admin. While VAC is still running as default, the option to enable PB is still there for the admin at any time.

Personally, I use PB more because it allows me to stream to 3rd party sites, like PBBans. And with that, as a server admin, I can add even more checks like MD5 Tools and CVAR scans. It would also allow the server admin to utilize the PB screen shot feature which is a big help. And admins can also take 1st person demos of cheaters in action and submit them for review.

Does VAC do all that? To be honest, I wish VAC would, but, it does not.

i have a love hate relationship with Punkbuster, its a good program to ban cheaters, especially with PBBan. But Punkbuster sometimes has the nasty habit to not automatically update itself, so you think, lets play a game, you go in the game, join the server, than playing for a few seconds you get kicked from the server because PB didn't update...

If Punkbuster manages to fix this problem its probably gonna be the best anti cheat program out there.

Btw, i have never, NEVER seen a cheater or hacker in RO actually, and i have been playing it since its release in 2006 and the mod version before that. But than again, RO2 is getting allot more attention now and idiots will flock to it to ruin our fun, i remember when Battlefield Bad Company 2 was released, you had aimbots all over the place.

I'm not sure which I despise more, cheats or PB. Cheats I guess, but PB runs a close second. I have never had anything but grief from PB-'protected' games. Even running around like a headless chicken making sure my PB was updated to the latest version was no gaurantee of not being kicked from a server for breathing.

And I shan't even bother to describe the number of obvious cheats I've witnessed playing on PB-protected servers.

looks like i will be avoiding these servers dont wanna risk getting banned for no reason. I have never had a problem with cheaters anyway, as i choose to play on servers with a strong admin presence. it sucks to see my experience may be limited because of this though. i would rather the community rely on itself then some 3rd party software that has a reputation for banning people for no reason. i myself have never had a problem with PB but its not worth the risk IMO.

Curious, why would this thread die when the beta comes out??

Because Punkbuster can also serve as a tool to help admins rather than serve as an automated banning system, Punkbuster has several levels of protection, and not on all levels is punkbuster able to ban.

Good luck establishing from a server-list which ones are running a 'safe' level of PB deployment and which are not.

ever get the feeling that some dont like PB because they've been busted in the past

no, I don't get that feeling.

Don't worry if you feel that cheaters are going to be rampant in RO2 I'm sure there will be at least one server running PB. They're more secure then the vac servers supposedly.

I've been kicked a lot of times from games due to PB. I'm not a cheater, and it's insulting to see you putting in doubt peoples claims, when you're not in a position to see our computers to make such bold statements with a base.

I would say something we use in my language when someone like you say that bunch of things, but I'll keep it civilized and walk away.

What he is trying to say is that PB may kick you for not being updated but it is very rare, almost never, that someone is banned by PB unless they are truly hacking or have a hack in their possession.

The PB haters are typically ones that have A) Been Caught B) Don't understand how vital it is to help keep the game pure.

Manually updating PB is a breeze. I may have been kicked by PB 10 times out of 1,000s of hours of game play.

If you feel so good about supporting the community you would support PB. PB keeps everyone more honest and prevents those who want to cheat the community from doing so.
