What about maps based on partisan operations, at least in conception. So, minor, intense skirmishes.

And, what about fictional maps. I have issues about creating maps as close to reality as possible because-

I dont know alot about east europe/west russia (like achitecture, environment, what the landscape looks like etc) I know theres the internet/books/films etc for research but I live in australia.

I dont want to choose two opposing units or, a battle/city/town that featured units that were notorious for war crimes in any way. So its going to be hard because i dont want to spend two months researching the unit/battles/towns/dates etc because I want to get get the map released before RO(2007) comes out:)

How do other ppl feel about fictional maps? I dont intend in any way to insult the ppl who fought the war, or their decendants, or to ignore the effort put in to be senstive to these issues by Tripwire over the years developing the game.

I just feel that if I make the best playing map I can, gameplay critisisms happily recieved, in the spirit of RO, then it should be enough.

It's really up to you as a Level Designer to make it as historically accurate as you want. If you want to make a map like KonigzPlatz that is a 1:1 scale and is as historically accurate as you can get then go for it. If not you can always make a map like Kaukasus where the look is similar to the real world location but everything else is done for gameplay reasons. For example, on Kaukasus there really was a road that Germans were using that the Russians shelled constantly with mortars from the mountains just like is portrayed in the map. However, the location, size, etc. of these things are purely fictional for the most part. Of course it would be great to have all the resources right at your fingertips to be able to make a 100% historically accurate level but that is never the case so you have to use artistic licence.

My suggestion to you is find a Partisan story that you would like to make a level around and jot down the units that fought there, the general location, and any features that stand out (for example if the Partisans were trying to blow up a railcar or warehouse). Now it is up to you to do everything else using the information you have collected. If you do not have a lot of information then you just have to use more artisitic licence. :)

All most people ask is that the level seems plausible and could really have happened in the war. Nobody is going to notice if your Partisans are attacking a warehouse instead of a railway station, or if they have to start in a forest instead of a town. It is entirely up to you. Hope that helps you out. ;)

Thanks DrGuppy. A map like Konigsplatz would be hard to do, maps like kaukasus, bondarevo, basovka are preety much fictional in the details,la out etc, so I'm thinking I can do it in the style.

Sounds like you might be interested in the map Monk and I have been working on.... RO-Partisan. :) We've been trying to reconnect and keep working on it, but our schedules haven't clicked.

The scenario is Russian partisans in a small urban setting attempting to delay a German unit that has some armor support. In the Ostfront version, that support would consist of a PIII and/or a StuG.

The town itself is winding and dangerous, with multiple paths that can be blocked by the partisans.

Yeah fictional maps are all good! A map has to be fun to play and thats it at the end of the day :D Obviously making it Historically accurate is a bonus but there is only so far you can go. Even well documented towns/cities dont enable you to build even a 70% realisitic battlefield as we have found for Campagna Italiana.

Best thing to do is set your map in a general location, say Normandy and make a map which is believable. Unfortunately we can't afford to take field trips to Italy and take photos so we have to rely on WW2 photos. Anything missing we have to guesstimate how it would of been :p

Remember most importantly think about it from a players point of view.

Would I like to play this map? Is it balanced? Does it look good? Is there the right amount of vehicles? Are the spawn points in good locations? Does it cater for a variety of play (sniping, close quarters etc..) etc... etc..

If the answers are yes then you have made a map to be proud of! :D
