On one of my german campaigns I had pushed past Moscow, Stalingrad and was about to encircle Leningrad by the end of November 41. By August 43 my line stretched from the province north of Baku to the furthest north Russian province. I had annilated pretty much the entire Soviet army in the first year with two huge encirclements in roughly where Poland-Byelorussia are (probably 150 divisions) and two further encirclements in Latvia (maybe 70 divisions) and Leningrad (maybe 80 divisions, I had Leningrad inside an encirlement within a few other encirclements.)

However, in 1944 the British had taken Baku after a 3 month siege (They had an empire stretching from Spains' former North Africa provinces all the way to Siam after a rather brillant move by the Italians supporting the Afrika Korps, they withdrew to defend Italy after Sicily was taken, therefore North Africa was untenneble and after a valiant few months the Afrika Korps was utterly destroyed in Tripoli. I could not spare enough men who were now deep deep inside Russia to save Baku. In 1946 my once world conquering Panzer and Mechanized divisions were reduced to a crawl, starved of their Oil, with Ploesti as well as Baku now in British hands. I had no Navy left after maybe 3 seperate groups of 12 Naval bombers wtfpwned every ship I sent anywhere, the Luftwaffe was still strong on paper, but because of the Oil shortage they were grounded. Finally in 1947 I annexed Russia with an almost infantry only force, my tanks only ever being used in short bursts when I came across a supply dump.

I hastily built up tonns of Infantry while keeping an eye on the US, who had still not joined the war. In 1948 I finally retook Baku after the hardest fighting I ever had playing HoI2 and then USA declared war on the UK and me. By the end of play in 1953 America, Britain, and Germany were all at a stalemate. The Americans against me in France, the British against me in Turkey-Iraq, and the Americans against the British in Africa (America as the top left hand corner of Africa)

Everyone had Nukes by this point but no-one was using them, for some reason.

Imagine if the world had ended up like that.

I love those sort of insane alternate histories :D

Sounds sort of like the world would have degraded in to a 1984-esque triple superpower situation

Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia...

I wish the game had an option of continuing. America was offering terms with an Alliance close to the end while I still foolishly thought I could push the yanks out of France. I should of taken up the offer :(

I loaded up a save and it looked like America was massing for a super-huge assault against me and the British. Almost an extra 200 Infantry divisions and dozens of armoured divsions were making their way to the front, Neither of us could withstand an assault like that.

Also, why would the US need 300 nuclear subs in the middle of the Pacific?

Thought I'd try a challange and play Russia from the 1941 start, with no prepositioning. Managed to hold the Germans at the Neva-Dnieper Line through the winter of '41, then launched some small counteroffensives in the Baltics to shorten my lines. Things snowballed, and four months later it turned into a massive encirclement of the Germans around Kiev. Caught 72 divisions (25%) and 11 armored divisions (44%), as well as destroyed two air wings on the ground. I hope to be in Berlin by the end of 1942, and in Paris soon after that :D

HoI2 is a real mood swing game for me now. It makes me really happy when something I've planned for ages goes off without a hitch, and makes me quit the game and put me in a really bad mood when the AI breaks through my fleets (The AI sunk one of my fleets in a single hour, I'm ahead on naval docttines) and sinks my entire invasion force of 34 divisions. At the end of the month. Right before it autosaves. ****.

I can't stand the fact that the Germans can beat back Russian divisions even when encircled and outnumbered around 10:1. When the Germans went into Barbarossa I immediately encircled around 25 of their initial divisions and attacked with over 150. They routed just about every single one.

However, when I'm playing Germany, I'll encircle 4 divisions in Leningrad and with around 80 planes flying interdiction / ground attack, plus 24 divisions attacking from all directions, they'll fight me back.

25 state-of-the-art divisions with attachments and skilled leaders can survive an attack of 150 divisions especially if they were *just* encircled and have not been sieged for a while to weaken their str/org. Several factors are in play here including weather and terrain. What really matters here though is the amount of divisions you are attacking with. There is no point in using 150 divisions in an attack, let alone 100. This is because of 'overstacking penalty' which gives each division in violation a -75. Imagine a general trying to direct 150 divisions in a single engagement...very, very chaotic. Those dozens and dozens of extra divisions without sufficient leadership aren't helping the effort much. A good rule of thumb is to try to have no more than 20 divisions and some change in one province/stack. Also make sure you have an HQ nearby being led by a field marschal (the one that can control 12 divisions). You will be much more effective :)

I don't bother with HQs much at the moment. I've taken over France and Belgium and have waited 6+ months for building up my forces for invading England (just to get rid of their 102 air divisions, mein gott) or Russia. It's November 1940. I will get HQs once the engagements warrant them, with 80+ divisions storming across the eastern front. Every division I have has a brigade on it, artillery, engineer, or AA. My tanks currently (MkIVs) have Tiger brigades. I figure I will roll out late 1941...Not before I bomb/nuke the **** out of England though.

I wouldn't wait too long to attack Russia, past mid-June it may even be too late.
