(CNN) -- Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, is dead, officials said -- almost 10 years after the attacks that killed about 3,000 people.
The founder and leader of al Qaeda was killed by U.S. forces Monday in a mansion in Abbottabad, north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, along with other family members, a senior U.S. official told CNN.

I was quite sure, that he was killed already years ago and then "Osama" and his alledged tape recordings were just used as an propaganda instrument to frighten up people. Interesting if the man they bumped off really was him. Long hunt one might say.

"He's dead"
"Where's the body?"
"Buried at sea."

I, like RedGuardist have a hard time believing he was still alive - and the fact that they have absolutely no real proof to show of, since they buried the body at sea straight away is only going to confound doubt. Even if they turn up with some images etc...

In the meantime I think I'm going to go and re-watch YouTube - The Power of Nightmares Part 1-Baby it's Cold Outside...

Wow, big news this.

I was also pretty sure he was killed in the first phase of the operations after 11/9, since the only pictures we've seen of him since then has been blurry video and bad audio that could easily have been faked.

Also a small (conspiracy-nut) part of me believed he was kept "alive" in the media, like Emmanuel Goldstein, the "Eternal Enemy"...

All in all though, I don't think it will make much difference - his role was mostly symbolic anyway I suspect, the active leadership having been taken over by younger guys in the organization.

Why hold the knowledge back if they could have just pretended he was alive indefinitely? Why announce it now? Think about it. It's the real deal.

I remember they reported his death some years ago, then denied it.

Maybe they are no longer interested in the war?, maybe Obama needs a popularity boost?

I'm not saying its false, in fact, I'm more inclined to believe its true. But I'm just saying its fishy that there is no proof, you know what they say: "Pics, or it didn't happen".

Anyway, I hope is true and you guys can move on. The whole middle east thing has taken just too long already.
