Ok, now we REALLY need a tutorial.

I did post this once, as did some other forumites here.

But since KF had 75% discount recently, a lot of new players joined the fun.

And I played with some of those.

And it made me realize just how bad we need a tutorial.

Why? Well, I just saw a player pick the "commando" perk, and buy a flamethrower (if it changes anything, I was playing firebug, and was top of the scoreboard).

Then, when I said KF isn't a regular FPS, and a flamethrower would get him killed, he went "STFU I play how I want to". He died from self-burn 2 minutes after the wave started.

So... we NEED a tutorial.

It can even be a link to a forum topic, telling people how to play. ANYTHING.

Agree. Like for those who start the game first time, KF would load tutorial level which would show players how to play and how to use perks.

Seconded...

When players load the game first, they should be unable to click "multiplayer" unless they do the tutorial OR the menu should come up with the message when players play the first time:

"Become experienced before you head to battle or become a burden to teammates and get slaughtered.. Click here for tutorial"

Something like that. It'd be better than "We reccomend you play the tutorial first. If you'd prefer not to, close this window"

Many, many, many people skip the tutorial if they have the option to do so.

Yeah except the problem is that TWI isn't really gonna link to something unless it's really important or cool or supportive of TWI, like with that Dead Silence video (which was ****ing wicked IMO :)). But you get my drift. The only thing we can do as of now is refer new people to forums, because some might not even know TWI has forums for KF. And they'll come and look and lo and behold, they'll (hopefully) get better.

Also, wasn't there a guide made here like 6 months ago or something? I can't remember who it was made by though. It was pretty good. Taught me some pointers on playing commando.

i agree with this. its annoying when people dont know how to play or organize the difficulty settings and leave it on any difficulty so they join a suicidal server as a lvl 0. all that happens is they ask for money, you being stupid enough to give them all you have just for them to die and **** you over in the first 30 seconds. happens like 3 or 4 times a day. a tutorial or even a 'how to get started' thing for beginners would be helpful

Guys, there already are tips on how to play if you play it for the first time...

They're very small tips.

They just tell you what is what, e.g. "The Knife - Switch to this to run fastest"

They don't tell you the real "rules" of the game.

There was a tutorial level in the KF 1.0 mod that I rather enjoyed. It was literally just a map built to show the game mechanics, have any mappers considered trying to do one themselves?

I would happily do it myself if it weren't for the fact my unreal map eiditng time could be counted in minutes.... on one hand :p

Poor choice of example. A player that retarded would either skip the tutorial anyway or ignore it and sitll continue to suck.

Seriously there are 7 perks, each clearly having different bonus' for different weapons. If people are too stupid to understand what can only be described as 'bleeding obvious' theres no real reason for TWI to waste time creating a tutorial for them.

Meh

Meh

I understand your concern, but this really is a simple game. No need to learn new people how to shoot and really, like Evilsod said, perks are really quite easy to understand.

I read this and as a result am making a thought out unbiased tutorial. I'll see what I can get done tonight. Maybe someone will find it useful even though this game is not that hard.

The problem is that there's nothing telling players the perk system even exists. Had he known about this, he'd probably take the time to read and probably learn from this.

This is why we need a tutorial. So people can be aware of the perk system, and learn.

@smalldemon

KF is far from being a simple game. It has an incredible strategic depth. As of now, the only way you'll learn this is by trial and error. And it'll take you many many errors to get it right. This is fine, kinda, but some players can become frustrated and give up after a while. If this company were Activision, then it'd be fine. Since Tripwire Interactive cares about their customers, then there's a flaw there. And it's very easy to fix it.
