Agreed, night battles with tracers, flares, and everything would be VERY fun. (and I'm talking like really dark, not "night" ala Leningrad---as much as I love that map)

In order to read the map or give away their position?
In KF flashlights attached to weapons make sense(I am aware of the fact that the one you depicted was not attached to a weapon) but.. in HoS?
I don't think its a bad idea but especially when taking realism and tactics into account flashlights are Imo rather useless. I can imagine that in the sewers of Stalingrad you could theoretically use one but as mentionend above...
Btw are we getting flamethrowers?

Then make them able to be toggled. Problem solved.

Yes, but then still... Dont get me wrong but I just don't see any real purpose for flashlights other than already mentioned.
What would you like to do with them ?
Theoretically it could help you at night to get around and along but as said before its Imo like begging for enemy fire and being discorvered.

Laying traps and ambushes.

I agree. Having multiple versions of a map, instead of creating one from scratch would make it fun as well. Just changing the ground from dirt to snow, and perhaps moving some objects around would make it more unique too.

^above post was for some other dude's comment.

I think we all agree that night/day cycling would roxorz. If this can't be an option, I think it'd be simple enough to have different versions of the maps at night/day too. Also just and Idea to those worried about not having enough light, Whatabout the light provided by the moon? There will obviously be some light. Like most nights with a moon out you can tell someone is a football field away, but you can't distinguish them easily at all, whether their weapon be in one or both hands, until they come literally like 75' away. Also besides moonlight, Flames, possible Flares, and others...what about gun flashes? You are watching an MG's back in a pitch dark hallway and due to the flash of the mg's firing you see a German behind you with a shovel/knife gettin ready to melee you in the arse.

One of the key ideas that this plays into is Community. Let's face it that's what makes or breaks a game. Providing more options really can make each server unique, and provide a more user-specific and custom WW2 Eastern Theater Experience/High. Thus making gameplay more fun=>more players=>greater community=>more fun...etc. IDK maybe I'm just mumbling but I used to run a DODS realism clan, and community was everything. Valve really nailed it on the head with making it easy to mod/create new gameplay maps and elements. This led to some servers, especially in the realism community, having more appeal than others due to more options. For example, if my server had night maps, people feel more bad*** running around in squads at night than they would on a stock Donner map. Ditto for snow, and rain maps. Maps are the world we game in, and making them change/seem unique could move HOS's fun factor score up significantly. -JC

And here I was thinking it was a Sony Walkman
"Buy the NEW Sony Walkman - it's Wehrmacht-approved!":D
Actually, I have a quite similar flashlight lying around here (but with buttons to slide colored pieces of plastic in front of the lamp to color the light green or red) - looks as if models like that one were still used in the 80's (or so - I think it once belonged to an uncle of mine, who was a civilian worker at the Bundeswehr. Don't know how and when exactly he got it).

EDIT: Picture of it: http://www.your-army-shop.com/images/Taschenlampe-Bw-oliv.jpg

The Wehrmacht had a flashlight almost exactly like this issue.

I would think soldiers would discontinue the fight until morning unless it's some sort of a surprise attack.

I like it though, I want it too :p
Not necessarily. Remember the nature of much of the fighting in Stalingrad -- ruthless, constant, and often completely chaotic house to house fighting. In many cases both sides didn't have a perfectly clear idea of who controlled what, so there were constant clashes in close quarters.

The day/night option for maps would be a pretty simple thing to add and would really change how the maps play out. It would also convey that sense of "constant fighting" that really was Stalingrad.

Officers and squad leaders could get one of these:

Can be COOL to have it also for visiting the Stalingrad Sewer (look like in the first stalingrad film !!)
Cool effect near a MP40 !

By having Winter/Summer/Night/Day versions of maps you can have maps that play different from each other, with less work than a completely new version from scratch.

GREAT IDEA ! Zetsu !

Can we have free weather on each map ??
A random weather system !

Each map will be not the same (for the weather )

Rain, sun, wind, thunder...

Logicaly we have the same system on the snow map with teh snow in more ;)).
Maybe we can have Blizzard ??
Rain, sun, wind, thunder, snowwind, Blizzard (heavy snowwind)

(maybe we can create a special russian weather time Raspoutisa ? )

My question is aslo :

Why the weather WIll NOT have physical effect on the soldier ?

I remenber a german soldier fixed 3 hours behind wall , when a soviet sniper wanter to kill him...
The soldier on the snow ground started to be FREEZED !

Why we can add somes Sun effect ?? Look like in IL 2 the sun reflect ?

Why we can see our own uniform switching color under rain ?? Maybe also the movement of the soldiers will be not the same.

i think this idea would be great, not the seasonal idea though, too hard to implement. If you think about it you couldn't just replace dirt with snow, you would actually have to retexture and compile the map again.

Time, however, is relatively easy, just create a new sky texture and adjust the brightness and light source.

Seasonal change wouldnt be possible on the fly. However most sections were fought for twice, so the primary difference on the map would be a beauty pass. This is not easy or whatever, but its easier than start with a completely new map from the starting position.

By changing the season and the initial state of destruction and moving some boxes around it could feel like a different map.

The actual beauty pass is one of the latest parts in finishing up a map, and especially with a game about Stalingrad having a good amount of snow maps makes sense.

-----

But at least a change of night/day or rain/snow falling down depending on the map would be great.

I think there was a thread about this already, well anyway, another chance to say that I fully support variable time and weather for maps. I'm a big fan of those things =)
