Hi,
I'm new to playing competetively online on the PC (although I've played some RO 1, and offline games such as OFP and similar stuff). I just bought a new rig for this game and ARMA III and preordered the RO2 Deluxe Edition. Anyway, my question is:

What system will people use for voice communication in this game?

There is the ingame voice chat that most people playing on public servers will be using i presume. Clans could also be using programs such as Ventrillo, Teamspeak, and other.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum and a big welcome to the epicness that is PC gaming - nothing else does multiplayer as good as this.

Regarding voice comms, most people will use the VOIP (voice over ip) that is built into the game, so you push a key and you can transmit to everyone on your team / server.

Groups of friends, clans etc will use Ventrilo, Teamspeak 3 or Mumble - there are a few others but these are the main ones at the minute. You can find more info on these using your good friend, google.com :)

Thanks, I tried a few games of RO 1 recently, but it was kind of dead and had lots of team killers. Do you think I'll need to have a clan to enjoy this game?

I'm used to playing tactically on consoles, and I figure team work will be even more important here.

You definitely don't need a clan to enjoy the game, but it might add to your enjoyment if you enjoy organised matches, tournaments and meeting new friends to play the game with. Although if you hang around here, you'll make friends in no time :)

I'm not sure where in the world you are but I always play on 'The Wild Bunch' servers, they have a couple in Europe and one or two in the States so you should be covered. They're usually populated and fill to 50 players each, normally consisting of fairly decent players, but also attract newbies like yourself. The map rotations aren't too bad on their servers either, though it's mainly infantry combat with a couple of tank maps - so if you want to go into the tanking properly you're better off elsewhere.

Since I play almost exclusively with our own group of gamers, I have rented a Team Speak server for several years.
It is completely private and no one except those with my password can join.

I often run it on a separate computer, but not really sure if that really helps with gameplay or not, but at least it isn't running on the host computer.

One advantage is .. I can put teams into separate rooms, so each team can work out strategies without the other team being able to hear.

I can also do the same thing if I run more than one game server, or if someone just wants to chat while a game is in progress .. the gamers playing aren't being disturbed.

It has worked great for us and no one has ever complained.

when you go thru the RO browser.. after it updates, click on players.. highlight a game with players, if there are actual players you'll see their names in the bottom right, otherwise it might just be a server full of dumb bots.. if the server says it's full, try hitting spectate and you might get in.. just keep an eye out for when folks leave.. remember the lower the ping the better!

You can also use the automatic join function within steam, if you join a friend. Remember though, for this to work you already need to have steam started.

Welcome to the community. :)

A lot of people will use the ingame VOIP in the game since you can reach the entire team with it. When people are playing with their clans, units or just with their friends they also often use software like teamspeak, ventrilo, skype or mumble. You dont need a clan to get the full fun level of red orchestra but like most multiplayer games this game will make a lot of more fun if you play it together with people you like. That might be a organized clan, unit, community or some of your friends or people you meet when playing.

And Skype is your friend if you want to communicate only with your buddies . I end up only using that.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I'll just use the built in voice chat to begin with and move on to VOIP if/when I get some friends or a clan.

I really like how voice chat is done on Xbox Live though, it makes communication with everyone so easy, and you can make parties if you're in a clan. It's so annoying to have people doing stupid stuff or just ignoring you with little means of communication, I guess there's allways text chat though.

Steam is using the Skype codec now for voice chat and it's pretty good. You can easily make Steam groups and do group chat. It is not as good as Ventrilo or Mumble, but it works.

Please don't compare mumble to XBL parties :D
