I have a couple of questions for a friend and it relates to me also as I will be getting a new system probably within a month nearly identical to his....

A clan member of mine had purchased/downloaded ROOST when it first came out in 2006, but had a dinasaur computer. It ran poorly, but even so he enjoyed the game. Eventually his system completely died and he had a new computer built; Some specs:

Intel

Well, it seems to have been a screen handling utility that was causing all the problems.

Now, RO does run :), but no maps are showing up in the practice and no servers show up at all in MP

The process of elimination continues...

edit: bah seems you sorted it out, sounds less like a heat problem now. Maybe a firewall problem or corrupt game.

RO bsod's for me in Vista too, but I have a dual boot so I just run it in XP. Not sure if its stable with other games though, so thats probably not much help to you..Might be something to do with overheating because his other games might not be stressing the CPU as much? He could try running a program like Orthos (in blend mode I think) and monitoring temperatures with Core Temp. Orthos will stress the CPU/RAM BUT when running a game like RO he could be stressing the CPU/RAM and the GPU at the same time which will probably add heat on top of what he gets in Orthos. CPU temps shouldn't go too much over about 60 degrees, or tick the box "show delta to t junction temp" and make sure the temp value doesn't go under about 20.

He could just try running with the side of the box off, see if he stops crashing or he crashes less often..if he does then he might need a better heatsink/fan (the standard one isn't very good) or he might be able to reduce the voltage going through the CPU (as long as its still stable its fine..just as an example if I have the voltage set to Auto then it sets it to 1.55V and mine overheats, but set it manually at 1.3V and its still stable but stays much cooler..he can change those things in his Bios by (usually) pressing delete on the first screen after turning the PC on) or increase airflow through the case by tidying it up inside or putting an intake fan in. The PSU pushes air out so one fan blowing air in might be enough, or he could put another exhaust in at the back (as well as the one pulling air in)..a lot of new cases come with an exhaust but no intake..he just wants cool air blowing through the case, otherwise it just stays there and heats up.

Thanks for the info, but from what I understand, temp is not a problem.

Right now, ROOST will start up and all just fine. The problem is limited to two things (that we know of):

- No maps show up at all in practice mode
- No servers show up at all in the server list

I should mention he is running VISTA and probably some other firewall. Could VISTA and the Firewall be the issue for both of the above? The maps not showing up in practice seem strange...

Thanks!

Mr Moe,
if maps are not showing up in practice mode, something is corrupt in the RO folder.
Do the maps have the correct extension : RO-Basovka.rom would be correct.

Delete the RO/Maps folder (then verify game cache) to make sure that they are as should be.
Gotta start somewhere ...

I was wondering, is gamespy used in anyway by RO to get the server lists etc? His AV/Firewall has that particular program blocked....

If he has a router he can probably turn off both his firewalls, as long as the router's inbuilt one is turned on afaik. Don't see any harm in turning the firewalls off (not the router one though) just to test. Then see if the PC is safe with just the router firewall by using this website or something similar:

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

If theres no router then try turning the software one off but leave the windows one on. If he still wants a software firewall theres plenty others that should be compatible with RO.

edit: might simply be a case of alt-tabbing in the game (or loading RO in windowed mode, or alt-enter ingame) to see if the firewall is asking for permission to access the internet.

Problems solved!

Your suggestion with deleting the map folder worked for the Practice maps, and there was his AV/firewall program that was blocking 'gamespy' and calling it malware. He unblocked that and everything seems to be working nicely!

Thanks for the assistance and suggestions in this matter!
