Ah I didn't realize mods had to be specifically made for the PS3. That kind of sucks.
Anyone know of any promising mods for UT3 in production right now? I looked around moddb and it's too hard to tell the good from the hopeless considering most mods only have screens of concept art and WiP models.
Yeah it makes the whole thing a tad pointless, the PS3 really can't handle anything too ambitious, just run of the mill mutators, and maps that follow along the lines of the default ones.
But no, i have seen nothing promising in the works either, but that does not suprice me one bit, there's a number of reasons why:
#1, This new tech requires alot more out of modders, including expensive 3'rd party tools like 3DsMax-9, and alot of things that used to be pretty straight forward now requires many more steps to compleate, its alot more conveluted.
#2, Epic has not been very forthcomming with info, things are poorly described if at all, and there's still many things we dont understand about the tech, for instance, nobody knows how to impliment new fully featured player models properly into the game yet, or if its even possible.
#3, Alot of the base code is now incased in C++, it is not open to modders, and we are left guessing how things are supposed to work, that coupled with how certain things are to be integrated into the game is not very mod freindly at all, previous UT's where more open and accessible than this.
#4, Modders have also been very buissy fixing UT3 instead of making new mods, UT3 shipped without alot of features that we used to take for granted in previous UT's, and still want, so alot of the old school talent in the community has been tied up fixing this, and still are.
#5, The new cooking process is also bad for modding, we used to be able to borrow assets from other packages at will, but now they must be an integrated and self contained part of your mod, maps have the biggest issues here, as they go from a file size of around 10 megs to 50 megs easy, because assets can't just be read from avalible packages anymore, they have to be integrated, its getting very hard to distribute them now, and mods that come with their own maps will become monstrously huge.
#6, Alot of talent has left the community, or has no intrest in modding for this game, the reasons are many, but people are too dissapointed with the game or don't like it, they are angry with Epic over recent stupid statements they have made, the game is not doing well on the PC, the constant bugging from the PS3 community to "cook for PS3 plz" is annoying them, and the constant fighting in the community over various things aint helping, and since the online playerbase is so small many players are giving them a hard time over mod making, since they feel it is splitting an allready miniscule playerbase, and much much more.. the community is not very healthy.
There's only 2 things that really give me hope here, outside modders that choose UT3 purely for the engine to make total conversions, and if Epic fixes the game, bringing stabillity back to the community and a bigger playerbase, and Epic really needs to do that, because the game is still crashing constantly on many systems, all players affected wont be able to enjoy any mods.
