Ah I thought 4g denoted the upcoming 4g network technology, my mistake.

So then it only bolsters my question, how can it be any better than current video calling on most phones given that it will be subject to the same data stream constraints as all other current tech?

Ease of use perhaps

So, all is clear for Apples :).
Now, if I wanted to get an alien Phone with Androids 2.2 init what would you people of knowledge suggest ?

I don't need to check if I've been reprimanded by Zips or DogBob but I want to check my GMail account when needed.

At work they gave me a Palm to organize myself (it never happened), I see that there are now Palm net phone/organizers on the market, any thoughts.
In France btw

Kucf Internets and its phones, I wanna live where they don't got socks...

Thanks...

Android phones are tied to gmail accounts anyway so you will definitely have that access on any of them. I have a HTC Desire on 2.1 (2.2 update out later this month) which is overall excellent, but I like HTC smartphones anyway - there is a Samsung phone out now or soon that looks very nice with an even better screen. You're spoilt for choice at the moment, and the longer you wait, the better the choices get - they're talking about dual-core 1.5 GHz processors in a couple months. Not sure what the battery life will be like on those!

On my current phone (which is 4 years old), you just go to address book select a person and select video call, it calls they answer and accept a video call and voila you're done.

I don't see how it can get any easier than that

You don't need a Gmail account, only if you want to use the Google services like Android Market, Gmail, etc.

And even then you don't need a Gmail account. You'll need a Google account, which can be a Hotmail address or whatever you like.

On my phone I just enter the number, press and hold the dial button and a popup menu appears what I would like to do with that number.

I think the whole thing with Video chat is yes, it's not new and it's been around for a while. But now it's on a platform that is going to be used by millions of people instead of the small user base as before.

So now that it's out, what do you Apple fanbois think of the reception issues, and Apple's denial of their existence???

I'm hardly an Apple fanboy, although I do love my iPhone 3G and will be getting the new one as soon as I have a job again.

The reception problem is not an issue for me, as I will be putting the phone in an OtterBox Defender case, just like my 3G. This means that I will not be grounding out the antenna with my hands, depending on the way I hold the phone. (Of course, availability of the new Defender case is the other big criteria, right up there with my holding of a job, to determine when I buy the new iPhone.)

That said, I do think it's pretty much a load of crap that Apple's big response was 'so don't hold the phone that way.' (Or at least, I think I read that somewhere ... )

lol Peter I hope you don't get a job only to afford Apple products (and not for the sake of a job to buy food etc.)

Well, no. I worked for a company that operates power plants. We don't own them - the people that own them contracted with us to run the plants for them. However, they're idiots, and they ran out of money, and stopped paying my company ... soooooooooo my company took their ball and went home, and fired everyone.

I need a job mostly to pay my mortgage. A nice side effect of it will be that I can then afford a new iPhone.

In my own little head I think this whole antenna fail has something to do with the Nokia patent violation and the suit Nokia is doing. Why else would a company make clear design flaw where just holding your phone in one spot causes signal loss right away? I tested this with my Nokia 5800 and had to cover everything on it to finally get the reception drop to zero. Why change a good formula that works?

Now Apple are "fixing" the problem by complaining the networks and patching the software. But wait...why does a rubber band fix the sofware issue? Sheeesh and people are paying, what...800-1000$ for this?
