Is Revolution any good? I tried the demo a while ago and remember feeling estranged because it was so different and felt a lot more toyish, for lack of a better word. I won't say "arcadier" or "less realistic" because Civ IV feels like an epic, computerized boardgame too, but Revolutions still felt gamier. It's hard to explain but I think you know what I mean if you've played it.
What do you think of it? Should I give it another chance?
I wouldn't recommend it at all. I bought it with great anticipation and learned to hate it after playing a while. To start, the unique units are only unique in their art, not abilities. The city interface is annoying as hell later on in the game, when there is nothing to build, you have to tell each city that has built everything to not build anything every turn. The diplomacy is non existent, because all the leaders act like 11 year olds (give me x or I will declare war next turn or the next time you refuse me x!) even when weak. And there aren't any open borders agreements, so if you go into someone else's territory, war is broken out. It even goes so far as to not let you help another civ in wartime
because you can't go through their territory. Its a joke really. However, the Civilopedia in Revolution is by far the best of any civ - and I hope Civ V follows its example. And there are other good ideas - such as roads costing money, caravans benefitting both the civ it belongs to and the civ where its used and grouping units together to form armies. But for me, the bad significantly outweighed the good.
Oooo B-17 special unit, nice! Looks like America gets two UUs actually, seems most of the Civs do. Only a few get unique buildings... Also anyone else notice under Greece "Champion Cavalry"... shouldn't it be Companion Cavalry?
What are the "abilities"? I never played Revolution.
In Revolution I guess they're called 'bonuses' and there's one for each civ for each era. Pretty cool actually, another good part of the game.
This IGN article has all of the civ's bonuses.
