LOL no dammit helicopters in RS, they will be in In Country Vietnam :D:D

Adding airplanes to RO2 (& mods) it's possible. The number of players is good for adding also airplanes & AA stuff; at least, i'm pretty sure that is possible, with a mod, to reach 80 (90?) players into a server....just look at DH, there is a server with 70 players.

Moreover, it's necessary to create special maps for the airplanes, that require a larger "flying area" to allow maneuvers for pilots and with landing zones to RTB or resupply ammunitions.

I did an example with paint :)

EDIT: this is only theorethical of course!

12 KM would be far too tiny for planes. You would have to do a lot of work to make non-playable areas of the map as well (or playable...). Because at 2,000 meters you can see far past 10 KM on a good day. Meaning that you'll be looking at nothingness.

Flight across 8KM or so would be very quick. It would essentially be like having infantry spawning on the other side of a room. Even ArmA size maps are too small for a proper flight game. I can fly across those maps in the helicopters within a minute or so. You would need map sizes of at least 100 KM for WWII combat aircraft. Unless they are BF style...

For those of you wanting planes, troop carriers to take you into battle etc.

Get arma 2 + I44

For those of you wanting a polished small(er) scale infantry and tank combat game, get Red Orchestra 1/2.

Simple choice, and it is yours not mine to make.

Thank you.
I doubt anyone who seriously suggests playable planes for RO1 or 2 has ever played an actual flight-sim. It's not just Battlefield but with arching ballistics for the MGs and spins when you mess up, you know. It's a completely different ball-game we'd be talking about.
One that just can't fit into RO on various levels. Literally fitting in, concerning the sheer size that would be required of the maps to make this work in an acceptable fashion being the first and biggest problem.

The netcode is up for it. I'm pretty sure about that. It's technically possible to make a flight-sim with UnrealEngine 3.
What isn't possible is meshing it into Red Orchestra 1 or 2.

Planes & Called-In Arty are simply Out-of-the-Scope of RO as its a Skirmish ( Squad-Platoon ) level FPS game with a game generally lasting a short 15 minutes...But Ofcourse, TWI will tell you otherwise

what if they made RO2 compatible with il2 1946? o_O

like how they made DCS: Black Shark compatible with Lock On. That way, the infantry guys would do their thing on the ground, and the flight simers would fly in from the airfield, realistically navigate to the battlefield, and then bomb/strafe the whole place.

If it wasnt obvious, i am talking out of my a** here...

I don't really care if they have planes that you can fly (in fact, it would take away from the realism as the maps just aren't big enough, and a flying game takes up a lot of code to make it realistic), but it would certainly add to the realism if you could see formations flying at different altitudes. Some way up high in dog fights, where you can see the curling contrails, and some flying either single or in formation above tree tops cruising along. They don't even have to do anything but fly overhead. Every once in awhile, see a plane off in the distance get hit by flak split in half and twirl down into a forest. You could even have flak going off that could be non-interactive - again, off map. I wouldn't say overdue it, but there certainly should be some maps where there are planes visible.

For one, DCS BS and LO FC2 use the same game engine. They are exactly the same, aside from the flyable planes, default missions and campaigns.

IL-2 and RO2 use completely different engines. And it would not make for fun gameplay if some of the players are helplessly being strafed. ;)

That would be extremely tricky unless there's a huge-*** group of guys standing and moving around like it's a huge furball unless you want to risk crashing into buildings or genuinely get under small arms fire considering how small target a human can be from aerial point of view. :p
