Can anyone explain to me why when I hit an enemy tank 4 or 5 times, my AP shells just bounce off harmlessly, but when the enemy tank hits me once or twice, I get blown to pieces? I understand deflection and range and variations in armor, but here's an example that just happened again tonight:

I'm in a T34 and later an IS2 (same thing happened both times)... shooting at a Panzer in Arad and later at a Panther. We see each other at long range at about the same time and start firing... I get off the first shot. We are face to face (no sides exposed, very small targets at 500 meters or more). Bounce. I shoot again, direct hit, another bounce. He shoots me, I turn yellow. I fire again. Another direct hit, another bounce. He shoots me again, I explode.

Am I doing something wrong?

I've scoured the manual and it explains the difference between HE and AP shells, but only in vaguest terms. Then it makes a reference to "see the vehicle manual for full details of usage of different ammo types"...(5.3.2.2 Ammo Types)
WHAT VEHICLE MANUAL?

/looks around, can't find any vehicle manual

PS: I LOVE THIS GAME but these tanks are driving me BONKERS. :)

Angle your tank. This means that the enemy should be between 1 and 2 o'clock when you fire at them (or between 10 and 11). Angling means that enemy tanks don't get a clear, perpendicular shot at your armor. The angle a projectile hits is more important than armor values in this game, imo. If your enemy is angled try to move around them to get a nice shot on a flat surface. Check the data sheets here for information about where to aim: http://www.redorchestragame.com/index.php?categoryid=3&p13_sectionid=2

The range adjustment doesn't really make the gun shoot flatter, it just adjusts the barrel higher (or the sights lower) to compensate for the longer range. You can get the same effect by leaving the sights at 0 and holding higher on your target, it's completely up to you which way you want to go. All shots are less likely to penetrate at long range. Adjusting the sights does not add power.

HE is high explosive. Use against infantry, (aim for their feet or a nearby structure, the splash damage will get them), bad against all vehicles. AP is armor piercing, good against all vehicles. The Panzer III gets APCR, I think on some maps. This is just a better AP round basically, to compensate for the smaller gun.

Don't point the front armor directly towards them. You'll be toast in any tank that way. It may seem counterinuitive, but you really have to do the angling thing. Also, where exactly where you hitting the tank? If you're shooting at the turret or on the body right below the turret it's likely to bounce off (it looks like there's a nice shot-trap where the turret meets the body, but there IS NOT). Learn those data sheets and shoot at the ammo supply, you can hit it even if you're shooting at the front of the tank.

You turn yellow once you've been penetrated once. The second time red, then the third penetration and you're dead. If you hit the ammo storage and it penetrates, it's an instant kill. In general I believe these rules are true, but sometimes it seems if you penetrate a weak tank with a large gun (ex. IS2 vs. Panzer IV), that tank's dead even if you didn't hit the ammo. You'll get a feel for 'what kills what' pretty soon.
