Actually, in first Chechen war during the assault of Groznyj, Russia suffered quite a defeat at first phase - they had sent tanks without any cover and without re-active armour. Lots of those were destroyed by RPG fire.
However, when there was more order and apropriate tactics and technology was used, the city was taken with not so high losses.

They also started sending in mobile AA with the tanks and APCs. The tanks main gun didnt have enough elevation to hit the chechens that were two, three, four floors up because of the confined spaces of the streets. They chechens would fire at the russians from a side street off the wide main roads to get the russians to chase after them. After they drew the column into street they would use multiple teams of 3 of a sniper, machine gunner, and rpg gunner to attack the formation. One of the best books on chechen and russian tactics without any bias is "Russia's Chechen Wars 1994-2000 Lessons from Urban Combat" by Olga Oliker. It was written for the US Military. I found my copy on Amazon.com for $10.

even worse they send in T80's with theire fire exstinguishers disabeled and with gasoline instead of the normal kerosone.

Even when they used T80's with those enabeled they performed muchbetter. Russia ****ed up because of corruption there but in the afgan conflict they were very effective with theire tanks because of no rampant corruption and actually using tanks properly. As soon as they started to do that in chetniya they performed incredibly better. Not to mention the extremely good performance of arena, drozd and the era.

Never ever compare Soviet tanks with NATO tanks because world war 3 never happened. The Soviets never invaded West Germany, the M1 or the Leopard never participated in a tank battle against a proper tank and was never placed against a Soviet motor rifle regiment charging at full speed, all guns blazing. Were comparing tanks by battles fought between a modern armored force, heavily supported by close air support and artillery fires, against an inferior force supplied with obsolete ammunition and tanks. Keep in mind that the Russians never sold the best tanks they had. What Iraq got was dumbed down versions of already old tanks with a big portion of those being not of Soviet, but Chinese production.
