What else did you guys expect?

Activision is a publicly traded company, this means that they have only one obligation, and that is to their shareholders, to make their stock ever more valuable.
That's just how the stock market works, if you aren't expanding and making increasingly more money, then you are dying, and the only thing that could get Bobby Kotick fired is if his shareholders aren't happy to sit on their Activision shares.

Now Kotick has done well for himself, sales of the CoD franchise have been ever rising, CoD:Bo made over a Billion Dollars in profit in the first 6 weeks it was out, and there's profits comming from the payware DLC also, but the poo is about to hit the fan! CoD is probably reaching the limit of how many copies it can sell, there is a limit to how many gamers are out there who will buy it, and that means there is a limit to Activision's growth potential.

Bobby knows this, and he doesen't like it, his shareholders won't be happy if their stocks are standing still instead of becoming even more valuable, ohh dear no, they won't like that at all! The stock could even fall just on the speculation that they might not rise!

So how do you keep the stock ever climbing then?
Uhh i know! Pay to play! Monthly subscriptions will save the day!

But here's the kicker my dear fellows, for it is only the tip of an Iceberg, Elite might make Activision more today, even if only 20% of the CoDites would pay for this "optional service", that's still growth! But there's a day tomorrow aswell, a day where Activison will need to make even more money..

It's quite perverse isen't it? Activision is sitting on the bloody throne, between CoD and WoW (not to mention Git-hero and all the rest), they are the envy of any man who loves him some money, hell there are probably small countries who would envy them (i can't imagine that Andorra and Lichtenstein could compete)!
But it's not enough, and it will never be enough, it doesen't matter if you are making more money than everyone else, not in this market, all that matters is that you make more money this year than you did last year.

And it's not just Activision, they are just the most succesfull publisher at the moment, there are many more out there with shareholders to keep happy, and if this gambit by Activision pays off, ohh my, we most certainly will see more of the same from them also!

Remember how PC games used to cost 50 bucks? But then MW2 cost 60 bucks on the PC, and now all the other big publishers charge 60 bucks also?

Welcome to the world of tomorrow! Dem monies, gimme dem..

Way to much income to worry about monthly fees bring em on :D.

Just spent 86 quid in world of tanks going gold and bought the KV3.

This game will be fun knowing a lot of people wont be paying and i can have that advantage always harsh but good i worked hard to be where i am.

Spoiler!

Yep, I guess you're definitely the type of player Activision looking for.

I can't wait to laugh at everyone who pays for the monthly subscription fee coming with the game. With 100+ people on my friends list it is going to be great to be able to clear out about half of that when I find out who bought the game.

I wonder how many people on this forum are actually going to buy it.

Not that it really matters. Sure there's going to be those here who mock the casual gamers and the regular buyers of CoD and then go and buy the game...or pirate it as it usually the case (so long as its not a game you care about, its ok to do it!) but who cares? It comes out in November. I think HoeS should be out by then....?

If people aren't intelligent enough to get their games cheaper in the first place(i.e. importing them) they shouldn't complain. And besides that you're exaggerating. I have yet to see a non-Activision-Blizzard game arrive in the stores at 59,90

This whole thing somewhat reminds me of that postulate that extreme sarcasm is indistinguishable from extreme idiocy on the interwebs without the use of emoticons. :x
