Yahtzee Top 5 of 2011 comment:

"No one got as pissy about Counter-Strike or Quake being as popular as they did, so why is it that the fusion of these two game types (The arcade FPS and the simulation FPS) seem to be the worst thing ever?"

:x
This isn't about popularity.

It's about a company milking the ever living **** out of a franchise and producing the same crap year after year that the mindless drones lap up without a thought.

It's about the lack of innovation, advancement, and care as to what your player base actually wants (especially if you're a PC gamer having to put up with P2P matchmaking style multiplayer).

Quake and Counter-Strike don't come out with new versions every damn year with one weapon being different and calling themselves a new game.

THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE, YAHTZEE. You freaking idiot.

At least Treyarch attempts to do things with at least a little innovation. I rather feel bad for them because I'm sure they're under an incredible amount of restrictions from Activision as to how much they can actually do within a set of strict guidelines.

Regarding the same crap being released over and over agian its really simple but at the same time tricky. Simple because its the customers own fault that this occur. Tricky because a lot of people probably dont realize this.

Friend of mine who is big fan of CoD told me that he doesn't want any changes to CoD. He likes CoD, how it is.

ps. He played RO2, liked small and CQB maps like Barracks, but got bored after few days... He absolutely hated big and open RO:O maps.

I think if it didn't say so on the box you people wouldn't even know which one was from Treyarch and which from IW or that there were two separate studios working on the franchise at all.

Blabla, Treyarch and IW CoDs are definitely different. Can't see how someone could not notice that.

There are only two differences I can see between the two:

1) Treyarch games tend to have slightly more recoil one the weapons, at least in BO.

2) Different stories (or lack of stories).

The online play between MW1/MW2/BO is exactly the same, aside from the "finding a new host" feature in MW2.

Platform compatibility to the point where console gamers can play with PC gamers is a pretty big innovation though, I'd say, in all fairness.

It's also much harder to implement changes into a series that is so caught up in e-sports like Counterstrike or StarCraft. Sure, a couple of new weapons/units can be done, but real, deep changes wouldn't go over well with the audience. What's being innovated here are mostly community features. Who can play how with whom. Matchmaking options, demo recording, cross-platform-compatibility, new methods of getting user created content to people, different ways of communicating and getting in touch with new people, persistent stats, etc. pp.

In this regard StarCraft 2 is almost unrecognizable compared to StarCraft 1. Same with Quake Live and Quake 3 although the game itself is quite literally unchanged. Again, CS:GO also made a huge leap, imo.
So those are in the clear, imo.:p

The Call of Duty series doesn't have an e-sports following. It's a game for casual players (and with that I don't mean the "****ing casuals" as they are cursed in the CoD community, but I mean players who're not interested in e-sports and just play the game, no matter how devoted they think they are to it). New gameplay elements are much easier to implement here than they are in, say, CS or Quake.

And CoD has seen plenty of innovation, in all fairness! Persistent stats and perks from CoD4 are now a staple for almost every modern shooter! Bullet penetration, Kill Streaks, Invasion/Horde/Firefight type coop modes, joke modes like that tomahawk mode...

It's just, people who don't like the series don't ever see changes big enough to make them like it. CoD is going to stay CoD.

Getting mad over every single new installment because it's still embarrassingly trying to hammer home the point of how realistic it is although it clearly isn't, because MP is still a relatively shallow experience that's too popular with kids, because the SP is another disgustingly patriotic exploitation of cheap shots at controversy - that's just fruitless, yet we have 20+ page topics for every CoD game here...

Of course none of that is going to change. For a series with a new entry every year it's far from the least innovative series though, imo. I don't think that's the problem with it and why people hate it. With Fifa or Madden maybe. I don't know. Never been into sports games. But to just transfer that argument to CoD is a little cheap, imo.
