What are some tips for using MGs in Rising Storm and some good spots?

I don't seem to be able to do anywhere near as well as an MG gunner in HoS.

Not only that, but the MGs (30, Type 96/99) have much weaker hipfire and in the case of the Japanese MGs...firepower than the RO2 mgs. The 30 cal. does not compare favorably with the MG34 and its ROF is significantly slower. The Japanese MGs do not compare favorably with the DP. There is also a lot of 'cannot prone' situations or places where one cannot set up their mg.

I played mostly MG and squad leader in RO2. Now in RS, I play assault riflemen and squad leader.

I know what you mean. It seems much harder to find good mg spots in RS than in HoS.

That's because we have small maps in RS with more varied terrain and viewpoint obstructions. Hills, jungles, thick grass make it difficult. Pelulei and Iwo work pretty well for machine gun defense though.

As defensive MG I tend to try to find a cliff or rock or sandbag or whatever to hide behind. and then try to hit the attackers in the side as they move forwards. You can cut down so many unsuspecting players this way. People dont expect to be flanked.

As Attacker I often try to do the same thing, but depends on map. If not I just throw myself down somewhere with some slight cover and just provide covering fire against bunkers and strongholds.

I have sweet spots on pretty much every map by now.

For the Japanese MG
Cover the laterals from cover protecting you from frontal fire until you level up to the sniper scope at 50. Then snipe from a distance.

For the US MG
Focus on volume of fire from a distance. Set up where you know your fire slices accross expected routes (either routes of advance, or routes players use to shift flanks). Press in that fire button and keep it in. Spam for ammo and 6 for barrel change.

One important thing : Dont be afraid to move. Especially if you start taking fire and dont know exactly where its coming from. Sitting there scanning for targets while 5 enemy riflemen take aim at you is a surefire way to get yourself killed. Also, if you get good at hip-firing, dont be afraid to get up close and person. I've gotten some good multikills doing that.

My best advice would be to find a place that offers a small but long-distance field of view. At least one of your flanks should be completely protected. If you just pop your mg on top of a hill, chances are there's at least one person watching. Alternately, find a spot on a flank looking towards the middle with cover to your forward side. I've found that a flanking mg position can work on attack or defense and can give you a wider field of view more safely than a position that points you directly towards the objective.

An open question: Is the level 25 MG in RS far better at hipfiring than the level zero?

I find the hipfiring of the RS mgs at level zero to be awful.
