How do you get the textures in the right sequence in the editors material slots?

I have tried naming my textures like a couple tutorials suggested materialname_skin00 so that it lands in the 0 slot in the editor and materialname_skin01 for second slot, and so on. But this did not seem to work. So I thought maybe the material ID# in 3d max made a difference but that didn't work either. Maybe one of these ways is right and it just didn't work for me. Also I have had where I have one texture and one UV map ID but when I export it to the editor it has 3 material slots and all the same material.

Can someone help me with this problem and what do you do if you have 2 materials and the first should go int slot 0 and the second needs to go in slot 03?

Thanks
Lex

I think you need to select sub objects, using the Edit Mesh modifier, select polygons.

Assign material IDs in the modifier. That should set slot numbers for textures.

Thanks for the replies guys.

What I wanted to do is get like the pants texture in slot 0, shirt texture in slot 1, and shoe texture in slot 2 in the editor, instead of them randomly coming into the editor.

I finally figured out how to get the texures I wanted from 3d max into the correct slots in the editor. A lot of trial and error but it works now.
