I'm curious what RO2's far higher hit probability did to that. Did it make it a lot more ranged? StalingradKessel is absolute murder for the Allies in RO2. A tough assault in RO1 turns into barely being able to get out of the warehouse in HOS.

Kaukasus was a slaughter for the Germans in the one round I played. Absolutely no way forward on Classic mode though for the Germans. We capped one point towards the end. Since Classic has increased sway I would not blame the hit probability but too many players and too little cover.

Another note.
When Univermag came up last night I received the message that it is incompatible. I had to delete all previous versions and the Kriegstadt.props to get it running again. The version was newer than the Workshop one so I had to delete that one as well and they are in different folders and all different from the stock maps folder. So for a casual gamer and casual PC user an almost impossible task.
After 10 mins I managed to do so and got it running but my guess is that the average gamer will not know or even spend 5 mins to sort this out. Again my mate complains about a download for a new map and then quits even though I measured the time how long it took him to download Bridges and it took him 7 mins. He stated it would take 20 mins and more before which clearly reflects the subjective feeling of forever.

Patience is a virtue!!!

Same problem, Incompatable, but unfortunately for me by the time I downloaded the new version manually, the map had changed on the server.

Nuts...

I was playing winterwald and around six minutes into the game someone joined and said, "OMG that took forever!"

Six minutes was forever. I guess this person doesn't remember the good old days of 56k.

I think another solution is for the workshop to work, but also have steam implement a way for the maps to download when you are not in game. I don't know about mods for other games but I assume they are a few mb or kb so it is okay to download them in-game. However, red orchestra 2 maps are on average 150mb. This takes the average internet connection 8 to 15 minutes to download. If we were able to just subscribe and then have steam automatically download the map whether we are in-game or not, this would vastly improve the state of custom maps.

Honestly, doesn't anyone ever have to get up to take a pee? Get up and get a drink or a snack? Prime time to do all that stuff! :D

Maps are coming along nicely in this game.I got the pleasure to test a unreleased map the other night with some friends. It was really well made and I cant! wait for it to go public!

It was refreshingly simple but yet large and full of depth. The atmosphere was one of the best I have seen in the game as far as what a real war looked like.

Out of respect of the map maker I will say no more ...only ....just wait!

Sir, it's not a freaking money issue. AT ALL. It's impatience and the attitude that you find by so many in today's world: I want/demand everything NOW, because I am ENTITLED.

Give me one, I repeat, ONE, feasible excuse that justifies a complaint about having to download custom maps? Be that re-direct, workshop or elsewhere.
I am sorry, I fail to understand.

I am in China. You know what that means? Downloading from e.g. your server or 2.Fjg? It means that downloading via re-direct, a map like Winterwald can take me up to 15 minutes and just last weekend, the map was over due to lockdown, once at 96%, once at 91%....:D
Who is to blame? ME. Not because I couldn't afford a faster internt (there is simply no faster internet available where I am), but for me not downloading the maps prior to joining the server. Bad example actually, as Winterwald was just getting updated and I was ingame.

However, people complaining about "oh, I have to download a map all the time, I WANT IT NOW" are the typical example of our sick entitlement societies.
I mean, is it really that hard to simply start your computer, start RO 2, minimize the game, drink a coffee, read the forums or even better, world news, then maximize the game and start playing custom maps? Because guess what: they downloaded while you did sth else.

PS: G_Sajer, you hopefully understood that I was not addressing you. Just the freaking whiners that can't be arsed but complain.

:) Understood.

I couldn't agree more.

I've had problems with maps DL'ing to strange places, all easily recoverable with a search on the forum, and understand that that might cause frustration.

However I do find it amazing that map makers and modders happily spend months and months generating new, innovative, free content for us, server admins set up redirects, TWi work (and are still working) to make workshop do it's thing, and then you hear complaints that it takes a matter of minutes for this content to download

The idea about "map packs" is probably the best solution. In the Ol'Unreal days there were "official" and "community" map packs. One shot download and install, ppl knew what they were getting and eagerly downloaded them before running off to a server. Servers advertised what map packs were required, really simple, no delays, everyone joined the map when it loaded, no redirects, no Workshops, no hassles.

Hopefully the TWI contest will result in a new official map pack. With all probability it will. As a mapper, I have collaborated on map packs and it was very rewarding to work with other mappers. Making maps gets more difficult with each itteration of the Unreal engine, and players expect a lot more. When you have level designers giving eachother feedback the result is better gameplay and more polish and greater community acceptance.

Aaaah a thread about maps. Where should I start.

Wait count to ten and realize I just better just not start at all....
Please do start.

We can't have mappers like you getting disillusioned now can we? :D

I want to thank you for all your work on Coldsteel, my favourite RO2 map.
