Should the rifles advance? No, they shouldn't they aren't designed to that. Right question is did they had to and that's yes, they did.
On company lvl yuo have yuor hmg's and regular squads that manouver while hmg's blaze anything that shows it's head. On platoon and squad lvl yuo have yuor lmg smg section.
Lmg hang back whit hes co gunner (rifleman whit spare barrels and ammo belts) while smg's go in whit couple rifleman who probably carry extra grenades/grenade bundles or other big explosives against bunker etc.
So the answer isn't being more aggressive or defensive. It's higher echlon tactics and drill... bounding overwatch/leapfrogging.
So pair up whit lmg or smg. It wuold be great if yuo'd get chance to customize yuor kit. If assault rifleman yuo could have yuor primary weapon then couple of grendes in grenades slot and a pistol/catchel charge/panzerfaust/extranades in third slot.
Overwatching rifleman would have primary weapon slot, sparebarrel/nades, mgbelts/scope for rifle.
