I actually thought that the tunnels were the commonly accepted defensive position.
Just about every round of manor I've played (and I've only PUG'd) has involved dropping down into that tunnel after the first few waves and either defending on two fronts (against those coming down into the tunnel & those coming in through cellar) or simply welding the door from the cellar and creaming the zed's as they enter from outside.
Strangely enough, rounds tend to end with taking on the pat outside. Never quite figured that bit out.
