Peripheral Vision (PV) indicators are a nice idea*, but they are all but invisible for folks playing on large widescreens. As the PV indicators on such screens almost fall within PV themselves they need to be much more conspicuous, such as rapidly flashing black and white. (Human PV is able to detect rapid changes in contrast far better than movement or colour.) Perhaps add a Display option for 'PV Indicators (Widescreen)'.

* Well, almost. They need to show all movement and not just enemy moves. It's currently possible to use PV indicators to see when emeny are approaching through a smoke screen, and to sometimes actually zero in on them by sweeping your view left and right of their suspected position.

I could (and do for all intents and purposes) live without them too but that's not going to happen. Better they be useable if they are to remain.

I don't get it. People actually like PV indicators being pretty much impossible to notice on large screens, or is this a small screen uprising against their widescreen betters?

Maybe I should have done a Keep/Remove poll instead, seeing as that movement appears to have hijacked the intended question. :S

It's not that they fall into PV it's that they fall outside of the central cone of detail. You may have noticed, RO2 is very much about pixel hunting (well, it is if you're not a njubgun-totting run'n'gunner) which means hunching over close in to the screen like an Ogre, and the edges of large screens quickly fall outside of one's visual detail accuity. The current PVIs are so very, very tiny and they blend in with the background easily.

If your pixel hunting wouldn't it make sense to not have it, then? If you are up close with people it would make more sense to detect motion. If you are 300m away and pixel hunting, it makes no sense, if you don't see it, then the game shouldn't help you.

If you wanted a more *realistic* PV, the surely you would widen the FOV and have a more aggressive Depth of field effect on the edges so that if there is movement, it would be more of a unfocused blur. Ofcourse that would be fairly irritating. But then again i always find DOF irritating.

People with small screens can still see the PVIs when pixel-hunting; with a wider screen you're far less likely to notice them. PVIs pick up (enemy) motion far beyond the few extra degrees of vision that a widescreen aspect ratio provides, and setting an aspect ratio that roughly matches the PVI pick-up angle would turn the game into an unplayable, warped, fisheye perspective. My point is that people using smaller screens have an advantage, small though it be, over those using larger screens in so far as noticing the PVIs is concerned.

The easy fix is to remove them entirely, as appears to be the prevailing opinion.

Another way would have it simply scale properly with res size of the monitor. (IE, higher res, larger size) But to be honest it's better to just get rid of it IMO. Having only recently noticed it myself, i cant say it has really been useful for me.

I don't know.. it has potential. This, together with the zoom, is really a nice approximation of the human eye FOV.

Yeah, that's true. But how do we deal with a situation like this: You're a sharpshooter and you've drawed some attention to you. You're hiding in a bush, or any kind of concealment, while I am trying to find you. I am ten meters from you - and I can't even see you - and suddenly I get a magic message that an enemy is present in the area?

There is some problems with it.. and i've experienced them because arma use this aswell.
I honestly don't know if i'd like to see this in multiplayer..

I never knew what these were until recently; was playing apartments and out of nowhere I see these little things just appear outta nowhere, scared the hell out of me. Honestly, I don't want to see them because I'd rather have to "try" to spot enemies rather than let the game "help" me notice the enemy.

Ofcourse, agreed it needs tweeking. For starters, the blips should not show stationary enemies. Even if they shuffle about a bit, they should not be blipped.

PVI is a good idea, but like OP and others have said - its kinda like cheating. I find myself using it to find enemies that I otherwise would not have noticed.

Remove PVI temporarily, and take it back to the drawingboard. Like OP said - it should show all movements, not just enemies.

The way I envision PVI, it should be one line on each side of the screen(1 or 2 pixels wide) that would give some indications of movements in the PV. Dunno how it could be implemented to not be annoying though. An option to turn it off should also be included.

It would be less usefull than now, but thats for the better. Im using a 19" 4:3 monitor, and I have an advantage on players that have 24" widescreens.

these PV indicators rustle my jimmies just as much as the recon drone, implanted radio receivers and more.

get rid of them altogether, at least on realism settings

I started noticing them on my 5:4 screen and I can see them on my widescreen now too.
Some people I play with really dont know what Im talking about because the never noticed them.

But its a great advantage to if you can train yourself to see them.

I know, one that I can't exploit; they're far too tiny and too far away from the middle of the screen on 24" 16:10 @ 1920x1200. On 4:3 aspect ratio I couldn't fail to notice them.

Grrr. Argh. Etc.
