I agree with you on the combat but the graphics engine is truly stunning.
The animations and voice acting during the cut scenes are just as great.

I am looking forward to maxing this out at 2560x1600 :D

Yeah, I'm tired of those cover systems too, but from that gameplay video and other videos of the game, I still think that this is going to be one of the best games of 2010. They seem to have done a really good job at creating the atmosphere, and for me, that is one of the most important aspects of any game.

Tbh, the original Mafia wasn't a gameplay behemoth either and it was mostly the atmosphere that drew players in. The setting, the characters, the story and how well the missions tied into it, the evolving city... Sure, the gameplay wasn't bad either, but it also wasn't outstanding and I doubt they will screw it up so bad that it manages to taint the rest of the game in Mafia II.

Personally, I think the game looks incredible. The combat doesn't look to bad to me. Every little thing seems so well done. There are little details everywhere that really contribute to the atmosphere.

i was going to say how this looked like gta in the 40's. but 3 bullets kills you, the ability to modify your vehicle.... etc .. and non cheese based immersion (un ending 'frends' calling to hang out; why cant you KILL THEM?!)...

I loved Mafia 1, and it seems that this one is gonna do justice to its predecessor. (oh, and I hate the GTAs)

Why? Vice City is probably one of the funniest games there is short of pure comedy games. A little too derivative of certain Brian De Palma movies at times maybe, but all in all it's very funny. The radio stations alone make it worth playing.

Yeah the radio stations and adverts have always been good in the GTA series, but they can only counter so much 'dumbing down' of the game before it just gets a bit too bland for all but the the blind morons. While I havent played vice city I have played #3, Sa, Gta4 and i would have to say GTA 4 was an improvement in graphics alone over SA. It just felt like the things they added from 3 to SA were an improvement, while SA to GTA4 is better graphics but nothing else...

As to movies ... the moment I heard that 'italien' accent I thought of the Godfather...:D

Before the original Mafia came out, some people also dismissed it as a simple GTA clone set in a different time period. However, when it was released they were all silenced. I expect the same to happen here.

it is by the same stem of companies though... 2k games owned by rockstar, and I believe also worked on earlier GTA's?
