Yeah, one of these help organisations once wanted me to give them money to free African child soldiers. They told me they could free them by buying them out of the army...

Yea. I mean if I could be 100% sure that the money actually goes to the infastructure or something else that actually really helps and not to corrupt dictator Joe who has 15 gold teeth and an army of child soldiers + me having a steady income, then I could imagine donating some money. On the other hand my father does that sometimes, and it only results in getting spammed by donation letters even more :/

I understand male circumcision but female circumcision a pretty new thing to me......
Yeah, they're both pretty disgusting.
Male circumcision grew out of the same root idea, really. Religion- or culture-based genital mutilation, with the intent being to control sex. Remove the bits with the most nerve endings, the bits that make sex fun, and then you can prevent it being fun.
In the US, the rationale for doing it to men is cleanliness, these days. It's just a red herring, though - it really came into vogue in the last half of the 19th century / early 20th as a way to (supposedly) prevent masturbation. It's really pretty much indefensible in men, and it's about a billion times more horrifying when done to women.
I'm curious to know what they actually do. Do we risk the locking of this thread, or do I scar my eyes by looking at google images?
What they do varies.
In general, though, and in the most clinical terms possible, the clitoris and its hood are excised, and sometimes parts of the labia. The most extreme cases include complete removal of the clitoris and hood, complete removal of the labia minora, and removal of the skin from the inner sides of the labia majora. The exposed meat is then stitched together - sometimes using thorns - and the girl's legs are bound together. When the wound heals, the external genitalia are almost completely missing, as the labia majora have healed together and are almost completely closed. This accounts for about 10% of the procedures performed in those cultures where this is considered normal.
Occasionally, rather than excision, the offending features are simply cauterized, burned away.
So, like I said, it's about a billion times worse than male circumcision.
It's done to enforce chastity. It's done to girls when they are very young, but still old enough to understand what's happening.
I strongly recommend against looking for pictures.
