TF2 was good until Valve turned it into a money-grabbing scheme and began neglecting the actual game. Today it's nothing more than a promotional tool from Valve and it sucks that the actual game hasn't grown at all in the past year and a half or so. Instead of fixing the balance, performance issues, bugs & glitches all they do is add either poorly designed or imbalanced weapons and hats which actually have a negative effect on the game.
I think it really comes down to finding the right server, or simply pugging. You don't have to be in ESEA to find sensible people who won't use a team of 5 heavies and a medic lol. As for growth, eh. I think this needs some perspective. Compare TF2 to counterstrike or the CODs, for example. TF2 is infinitely more dynamic, and has its fair share of skill involved. Uh, it's not as complex as quake is (lol), but you can't quite say you're disappointed with where the metagame is today. Some of the items are horrendously broken and suck (the wrangler/etc comes to mind), but there's enough of the good stuff to outweigh this, imo.
But yeah Valve has definitely started to use TF2 more as an advertising service. I don't blame them really, it makes them more money. The only thing I'm left wondering is how in the hell they haven't released HL2:E3 yet with all the hat revenue.
I used to play TF2 all the time and even played it competitively for two seasons around late 2009-early 2010. The only reason I occasionally play it today is because a lot of my friends still do.
AHA. Everyone comes crawling back eventually. There is no escape.
Killing Floor is still fun; it just seems that fewer and fewer people are playing it nowdays. Whenever I find a game it's either a bunch of low levels for a berserker kiting team. Hopefully there's another update in the future which brings life back to KF, because the game is definitely still interesting to me.![]()
Play with friends then. What you're saying makes complete sense when you try to find random matches, but if you (for instance) have a steam group of ~30ish people who enjoy the game, it's pretty easy to post an announcement and get a game going nearly instantly. Having access to a private server is probably the deal-breaker.
