I have recently been doing a translation of a battle report by a Russian razvedchik or scout.

In it the guys says this:

Через каждые 10—15 минут немцы выпускали осветительные ракеты

Which means:

Every 10 minutes the Germans released (let off) signal rockets/flares.

but the line got cropped by the page so ending so what it actually says is:

Через каждые 10—15 минут немцы выпускали ос

which basically means....

Every 10 minutes the Germans released wasps

------aiiieeee!!!! Run away!!!one1 The German Wunderwespen are coming!!!!

See, just now the US is working with wasps that have been trained to detect chemical signals of explosives and possibly to sting anything near the source. And the Germans? They had the tech 65 years ago, just set to russian instead of explosives !

A few weeks ago I mistakenly (or so I thought) translated the Russian phrase 'Konservni zavod' as Jam factory, when it should have been cannery, so I corrected it.


....but now I'm not so sure.
