Has anyone started experimenting with wine yet? (The Linux program, not the headache juice) I have made a few attempts at getting the server going using it. I had the server going for a few seconds then threw back a few errors. Hopefully can rectify this and monitor the performance.

If anyone has got it working with little to no errors could you please shed your wisdom!

I don't have much experience with wine, but I was actually also thinking of starting to experiment with it.

I tried to search for info on whether there has been any other windows server software run by people on linux with wine, and how much performance loss is to be expected. Seems like you lose like 15-20% on 3D games nowadays, but maybe a server would run better once gotten to work?

I just used VirtualBox to virtualize Windows Server 2008 and installed BETA server there. Seems to work fine so far, today going to do first gameplay tests there (most likely with bots)

Oh that's pretty cool. I guess some performance must be lost to the virtualization though, so it's gonna be interesting to hear how it goes.

I have already use emulation software like Wine
too much loss of performance and stability
I just hope that linux will be binary will builds for RO2
especially since,I have a dedicated server i7 950 with 24 GB
Wine is much more to adapt for software than a game
And I'm not sure on the virtual machine like Vmware or Virtualbox who is not a good idea for a game server
especially as virtualization consumes a lot on a dedicated server even if VMware has made strong progress on the subject
I just hope the linux binaries are coming soon

wine is pretty bad for game servers: when I tried it for brink and alienswarm it wasn't very stable and had memory leaks too. the same versions on windows were solid
if you go the path of virtualization, better choose vmware for windows guests if you seek performance
vmware server is (or soon will be) unsupported, but it does the job
vmware esxi hypervisor is great, but requires you to format which may not be an option. Additionally it gives no access to the host OS

Ive never used, vmware esxi, of got a choice of using 4.1 or 5.0. Could someone guide me to setting a server up using vmware esxi?

Yes VirtualBox virtualized Server 2008 RO2BETA-server didn't work quite so well, everyone was experiencing unspeakable lagginess. Maybe server isn't optimized for Ubuntu->VirtualBox->Server2008 -combo.

I fixed this by installing server to pure Windows Server 2008 HDD. Now it works perfectly!

I suppose we just have to wait for native Linux support... :(
