I also think it is a terrible idea.

@Colt

It introduces a barrier to entry for new players. Granted it is annoying when a low level player joins and dies, but I've seen poor players that are level 6 and great players who are level 2. There are tons of other decent ways to deal with the problem of new players joining hard difficulties, a few of which already exist

Clearly you arent playing on Hell of Earth or even Suicidal. Just last night I was playing on West London on my own server when 5 level zeros joined on wave 8 just after shop time so I didnt have time to kick them, and then some died instantly and the others just disconnected right after joining leaving me with 250 specimens to deal alone as support ... -_-

And just yesterday I was forced to kick about 50 (NO exaggaration) low level characters mid-game causing me to lose precious shop time and sometimes even getting me killed while in the player menu. I have even changed my server name to say "Levels 5-6 ONLY or kick!" and they STILL keep coming in masses. Passwording the server is not an option because I want everyone else to be able to play there, and the perk replacement mutators are buggy.

While some level 6 might be bad players they at least spawn with a weapon, require way less money and do way more damage so changes for survival are actually higher than for a so called good level 2 player. And btw I havent met a SINGLE level 2 player who would have survived on HoE, not even my friends who reseted their perks. Im not saying its not possible, but its HIGHLY unlikely that such player would join your game (seeing as in 800 hours I havent seen one). Hell I even used to give a chance to all low levels when I was just starting on higher difficulties but based on experience they always died on the first wave they played so its beter just getting rid of them right away.

The problem I see with this is that some people have inconsistent levels. For example, I am level 5 Shapshooter and Medic, level 4 Commando and Support, and then level 2 Firebug and Zerker. Would the filter look at your highest level perk? Or would they all have to be a minimum level? I would like the option, but I'm not sure how it would work exactly.

The way I see it, you should be able to join a server as spec with any perk but in order to join the game youd have to select a high level perk. This way anyone who doesnt have them couldnt play and would then (hopefully) disconnect.

But if you have level 5 sharpshooter and every other perk low level, then you SHOULDNT play on the higher difficulties, simple as that. Sharpshooter is the fastest to level up so even a newcomer could have level 5 after only a week of playing...

Last night i was playing with this high-level person.

He started out as Medic, but then switched to sharpshooter and stayed as such.
Another person who after being told to go Berserker from Support, took about 2-3 waves to do so.
HoE, by the way.

It's disappointing when higher-up players don't have common sense, and it seems that everything you say is right.

I also had a few low-levels join, and they died, and promtly left.
RQ'ing is a really big annoyance and a source of frustration; often found in low-level players who upon realising this isn't as easy as L4D/CoD/etc, leave and find another high difficulty server to sht up.

I also remember that game i played with you and the others, so i saw how many low-levels joined.

I filter like you suggest is a great idea.

It seems to be a fairly popular idea and the poll certainly seems to suggest the majority of people would like to see this implemented in some form.

I just wish someone from TWI would weigh in with something even if it's a reason why this shouldn't happen.

Indeed because like Ive said before, this problem has been around for ages and its MUCH worse during free weekends and sales, and even tho the free weekend is already over theres still hundreds of new people who just bought the game during it and are STILL flooding on my server.

Would be really nice to get some input on this subject wether its a positive or negative response.

I just feel that this suggestion is allready overdebated... all I can do now is bump threads so it dont fall in the "forget list" and vote yes for this type of suggestions.

yeah, last time I was around discussing this there was some dispute over...

"If you have a level 6 and join a level 6 restricted server. would it still be possible to change to a lower level in game? to take the role of a much needed medic?"

and I will reply myself by saying:

"If you join a level 6 perked server. your lower levled perks should be disabled?" (and again is that possible?)

I would say the following would happen.

a: join server
a.1 - ( No perks > requirement level ) - Fail to connect, message informing why pops up.
a.2 - ( some/all perks > requirement level ) - connect normally

perk selection
- Perk of proper level - select normally
- Perk below proper level - Greyed out with text over perk selection saying disallowed or disabled.

This way a player with one level 6 perk can join a level 6 server, and either play with that perk, or realize that it is a limited server and go elsewhere.

feels kinda dumb if you ask me

say if the server have level 6restriction
if you have a level 6zekers. and when you join ur team is in dier need of a medic example. but ur medic is level 5. that would totally kill the role teamplay sorta thing...

but I just have to agree. since restrictions shouldn't come with loop holes in it :p cuz than we could just forget the whole thing!

I am in favor of a level filter. Sure, there are intelligent low level players and idiotic level 6s who don't kill their share of specimens, but this is not a simple skill problem. It's like a lowbie in a MMORPG trying to run an endgame instance. They simply do not have the stats to survive without being carried by the team. If an admin is OK with that, they can leave it open, but there should be an option to keep players without at least one sufficiently powerful perk from joining.

Of course, you could just password your server and put it in the server name to prevent people from connecting if they are illiterate, as most of the low levels in suicidal/hell games seem to be unable to read.

I very much doubt TWI will ever implement something like this. I seem to recall a chat with [-TT-]Lenny about a little something he cooked up to automatically kick players whose perks didn't meet the minimum level requirement, even if they switched to it after joining as a high level. Apparently it was blacklisted or something.

My own personal hell
Since it would be still possible to get decent numbers of public players on a 'Level Filter' server, unlike a passworded server, my guess would be most server creators would add a level filter if they could. For low level players, this would likely either end up driving them away from KF or encourage them to level grind and cheat. I seriously doubt most of them are joining high difficulty servers on purpose, so a minor modification to set the default server filter to beginner and/or adding a pop-up message to let a low level player know when they join a tough server then the problem would likely solve itself.

Also TWI likely isn't going to respond to most threads, particularly ones dealing with design decisions. That's normal though a bit annoying.
