The main difference I think is that RO1 wasn't polished which was actually a good thing. Weapons sounded and acted like a punch in your stomach, gameplay was unforgiving, none of that regeneration bs, zoom and low recoil. The game wanted you dead and the only thing keeping that from happening was that you jumped from from cover to cover, alot of times sitting in a hole with bullets whizzing by your head and grenades exploding and you knew you had to get out there to cap or defend.

While other games try to smooth out the rough edges RO1 did the opposite and succeeded in doing so.
