Its a close contest between the Leopard, Abrams, Merkava and Chally 2.

I would say its the former though, since its by far the coolest.

Leopard has superior optical stability and fire control than the Abrams. From the ook of that video, the Sherman was on the top 10 list - wasn't it renowned for being bloody awful though? It's only advantage being that it was produced in massive numbers.

I dont know. All the stuff about best tank in the world stuff is guesses anyway. Perhaps T80's perform much better in most conflict than other tanks.

Leopards are really nice tanks, but they've never been used.

The Merkava is arguably the most versatile, since it can schlep a few infantry around. Pack four troops in there with Javelins (I know, US weapon, I don't know if the Israelis get them), and all of a sudden you have one hell of a tank hunting team.

The Abrams might be technologically inferior...but coupled with American operators (extremely well trained), does it matter?

Nice video! Would like to see whole episode. Anyone see this moron's comment? "...However there are many features that the leopard has that the Mk4 doesnt.

Speed, Armor, ability to submerge underwater, a real live feed of outside the tank indicating freindly tanks

Its main gun fires a 120MM round eceeding speed of 1700 miles per hour. WHo needs an automatic gun when one shot can do it all?"

Then he "corrects" his mistake... "Im terrible sorry to annouce that I misinformed you about the velocity of the Leopard's round.

It travels at 1700 miles per minute."

ROFL! Over 100,000mph? Somehow, I dont think thats right! :D

likely more 1700 FEET per minute.

The Leo 2 is an excellent tank.

(T34/85 made the top 5)

My vote goes to the M1A2 Abrams. It is far from technologically inferior and has some very high quality equipment. The Leopard 2A6 is a great tank however, it is just not better than the Abrams.

T80 and T90 are nothing but talk.

These beasts of war don't differ much IMO.
I prefer the Merkava series because they have those beautifull curved shapes in their hull :)

The fact the leopard has the same British armour and cannon off the challenger 1 that the Abrems has sort of make it a moot point on which ones the best in thoughs respects. The leopard out of the two is the best even though it hasnt been combat tested, the advanced vectronics used in it are the same spec as the Challenger 2's not the Challenger 1's that the Abrems has.The main reason that makes the leopard (and any other tank) better than the Abrems is simple. It doesnt have a god damn jet engine to get a heat seeking missle placed up its arse.

Challenger 2 has the fastest turret rotating speed on any tank built, has better armour and cannon than both the Abrems/Leopard. After all Vickers wouldnt give Americans or Germans the lastest technology would they? Just to point it out The Challenger 2 was made after the 1995 documentry in question.

If you looking for best tank, you have to take into account "proven in combat"...and most advanced does not necessarily mean better....

Challenger series, Abrams, Merkava - proven in combat
Leo II, LeClerc, Type 90 - have never seen real combat

All the bells and whistles in the world are great...if they can't survive the first hit, they're worthless....

(I'm probably a little biased - a 19K (tanker) on the Abrams for 12 years ;))

Uhm...

The Leo2 has a Rheinmetall 120mm L/44 - L/55 smoothbore, developed by Rheinmetall of Ratingen, the Abrams is using the same gun build under license and one of the above comments regarding the "excess of 1700mph per hour or maybe minute" etc is probably incorrectly read, the announcer most probably meant to say "in excess of 1700 METERS per second", which turn out to be some 5500+ ft. per second.

"Challenger 2 is equipped with an L30, 120mm rifled tank gun from BAE Systems Land Systems (formerly RO Defence). In January 2004, Land Systems was awarded a contract to develop a new smoothbore 120mm gun for the British Army Challenger tanks. Rheinmetall of Germany will provide examples of the L55 smoothbore gun fitted on the Leopard 2A6 for the programme."

Hm, so they must be "downgrading" the Challenger 2 armament then *o_0*

Ah, the Challenger 2 was made after the 1995 docu?...

"Prime Contractor was Vickers Defence Systems plc. Vickers Defence Systems started work on the Challenger 2 in November 1986 as a private venture and shortly afterwards, in March 1987, made its first presentation of the vehicle to the British Ministry of Defence. In February 1988, Vickers submitted a formal proposal regarding the tank to the MOD following the issue of the staff requirement. In December 1988 it was announced that Vickers Defence Systems was to be awarded a

Explain to me how the M1A1 Abrams is proven in combat?

Fighting assholes with rags wrapped around their heads and 30 year old RPG's or demoralized and poorly trained Iraqi soldiers in barely running 20 year old tanks is nothing.

I'm talking serious tank on tank fighting against a capable enemy.
