ANYONE WHO CRASHES AFTER GEORGIA, PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE
Finally, FINALLY, after all this time I was able to get in game. Played my first three rounds, and I'm able to start KF2 and join servers repeatedly, so this is not a fluke.
In this thread: http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=107979 I used this tip to get into offline.
Since launch, I've been tweaking the game in every way I can think of to make it work. No such luck. But I do remember one thing from the few times I got into the menu - my avatar picture was distorted. At the time, I thought nothing of it, but then after I got the game running while offline, I began to think.
I checked my steam avatar - and sure enough, it was not of the dimensions Steam prefers (184x184 for a big avatar - mine was 184x160 or something). I modified my avatar to have uniform dimensions by adding a border, uploaded it and bam. Killing Floor 2 now works.
Give it a try! (Note: older video card users might still want to use the -dx10 command line option).
