Does anyone know whether this loading plate function was present in the sniper variant of the k98? It would seem like a potential disadvantage, seeing as it would force the soldier to use extra force and effort to reload without the leverage of a stripper clip.

I don't see how the plate would affect how hard you have to push the round in. A K98 magazine isn't like a Mosin Nagant where the rounds in the magazine are in a single stack, the rounds in a K98 make a sort of zig-zag. The loading plate has as a raised area on one side of it, it allows the rounds to fall into place correctly, and after the last round has been cycled, the raised area is where a round would be. When you attempt to push the bolt forward again, it will not be able to close, as the raised area is blocking the bolt from cycling.

That's a horribly made paragraph, and I'm not proud of it, but I can't exactly find a picture of one at the moment. Still looking for a bit...

Yeah, I always found it strange in Ostfront when I'd be ready to fire and then *click* where I didn't have that problem in reenacting or on the range because the action couldn't close without manual pressure to the plate or a round going in. Now I remember about the pressure plate.

Stripper clips actually make you exert more effort to load rounds usually. Since usually the bands are extremely tight against the clip, this results in the bullets being extremely hard to press into the rifle. I have 10 prewar K98 clips, and out of all of them, only 2 are "relatively easy" to push rounds out of.

There seem to be a lot of people talking out of their *** in this thread.

Back on track, however:

Thank you for mentioning this suggestion. I have one myself and completely forgot about this feature! I always found it frustrating when I would shoot a fifth round while not counting, only to release the firing pin on an empty chamber at an angry Soviet. I hope to dear god the developers put this feature in so that it will really give the Germans the advantage they truly had back then. I am glad to hear that the accuracy for the Kar 98k is higher than the M91/30 as it is in real life.

The plate is extremely easy to manipulate, it just needs to be slid gently back under the bolt. The plate kind of traps itself between the magazine and the bolt, I slide the bolt as far forward as I can, hear the click, take my thumb and push it softly forward, making it "snap" under the bolt. A bullet would do the same thing. Sniping is not any bit harder, and is already modeled correctly for the most part in RO.

My grandfather came home with a 1940 model, so everything still fits together extremely well and is precision machined. I have heard later versions were made much more sloppily to push out larger and larger volumes for the Volksturm. He actually found it in an old Lady's attic, presumably given to her by the SS to fight off the allies. I am very impressed with this rifle and have been since I was very young. I was honored when he gave it to me.
