I just pre-ordered RO2, yet I've never played ROOST. Seen plenty of videos and read plenty of posts but I was wondering if there are any pointers you guys could give to a guy new to the series.

well, it would help if you could go and practice on ro1 :p
but in general you need to learn how to aim with the balistics system in mind, aiming in front, allowing for bullet drop etc.

I hear a lot about the bullet drop in the RO games. Is it bad? Everyone makes it seems like the bullet just flops out of your gun.

The bullet drop isn't bad, it is just...there. Most games simply don't have bullet drop except for (usually fake) drop for their snipers. You have to account for it at the longer ranges, but it isn't very hard.

Most other games either have no drop or extremely exaggerated drop, but I always found RO had the right amount, a small tip is to keep your head down if theres a machine gunner out there and to aim your shots well :)

To be successful and play well you have to take it slower.

Regular COD or Bad Company tactics will get you killed.

In most cases, it's almost 1 shot kill, so you do more damage by taking your time and obviously knowing the map will help big time for positioning yourself and proper advance.

Teamwork of at least 5 to 6 guys can make a game.

Squad commander can make the game if people follow the orders of the one who has that position if he does a good job.

Besides that, the game feels more real and requires more thinking then the average shooter.

RO1, with practice and knowledge of how to play it is quite rewarding.

RO2 should be similar but easier (less clunky) and a bit faster pace than the classic.

Looking forward to it.

(Note, those tips as written by a drunk man on Saturday 4am)

will reread tomorrow :p

Bullet speed is more a factor in the RO games I play than bullet drop. This means leading your targets as they move. Having gotten the achievement for the 200m kill with Ironsights, I can say there's very little drop in the ranges represented in the game.

This is completely different than Armed Assault where bullet drop actually matters a lot more. Of course, in RO2 that may change, but somehow I doubt it since most Rifles have little drop under 300m... and to be realistic with their ballistics they will maintain that.

My tip: be patient, learn your weapon, aim well and don't miss. If you miss you may give away your position and the enemy could take you out instead. Make your shots count. If you have a submachine gun, it would be advisable to wait until they get closer, or use cover effectively to close the gap yourself. Don't go banzai charging, as an experienced enemy Rifleman (there are plenty in RO1 these days) will take you out fast.

Duck and cover, don't get up or run infront of hot mg barrel. If guns have physical models you can support your gun easier against walls I think, without reaching out of window with you rifle and exposing your precious head.

Try not to go solo if thers friendlies around, it was scary in ROOST to get face to face with bunch of SS men with only rifle in some dark ruined apartment, instead you can all win or die together.

(In urban combat I sometimes follow mg gunner and cover his arse, but mostly only when bored to death waiting to see some enemies to take out with smg.)

I haven't played RO1 in a while, but if I remember correctly, the only weapons that had any bullet drop, were the snipers. (At least there was a big difference in Kar98 scoped and unscoped in terms of bullet drop). But more than drop you have to think about leading the target, especially when firing medium to long range shots with bolt action rifles.

You shouldn't try to hip fire unless you are certain that you have no time to lift your weapon and aim through the sights, though there are a few exceptions, mostly with submachineguns.

Don't be a rambo, it really doesn't help when people are trying to cap an objective.

Be a team player, always wait until your halftrack is full before.

One well aimed grenade can save the objective for you, but unfortunately, one not-so-well aimed grenade can lose you the whole game if you manage to kill teammates from important positions.

Can't think of any more than that right now...

You should probably get used to using plain bolt action rifles before moving on to anything else because chances are that joining a game in progress you are going to be a rifleman and good riflemen can do just as well if not better than the other classes. (at least in RO1 not sure about RO2's system yet)

One thing most decently made hollywood movies did right in regards to war, is when they show soldiers taking fire and not "Stalone'ing" through mg crossfire (mg stands for machine gun if you encounter anybody typing or saying that a lot)

Sit still, take cover, don't expose a frig'n toe or someone will take that toe away from you.

Take a second and think about your options. Wait and estimate by sound, any footsteps, gun fire direction, when an enemy is about to empty their clip, when they are reloading.....

Don't be afraid to ask for help, and not just for tips, but from team mates to help take something out that you can't, because eventually, you'll soon have a chance to pay the favor back & take out some enemies pinning them.

Don't just feel like you have to run out and kill a few guys to rack up a score. Your doing enough by not getting killed, not taking you tickets down and being one more person in a cap zone, which can make all the difference in a game.

Take someone out the moment you see them, because if you can see them, than they can see you.

Most importantly: learn which uniforms go to which country. you team in a map can have several uniforms running around with different colours.

Killing a team mate in this game is very costly and is frowned upon much more than in other games, so say you're sorry when you do it, because after a while, if nobody forgives your tk's, you're off the server in most cases.

RO is simply nothing if not involving, and it also comes with personal enjoyment when you do eventually have the highest points than anyone else in a round.

I had that happen last night. I know I didn't kill the most enemies, but I helped get all the caps and took down enough enemies to top the ranks of both team's players.

Getting the most kills, isn't the objective in most of the game.

Enjoy

Observe the battlefield but not for long streaks or you'll be sniped ;) and watch your flanks if its an open map you tend to get small groups of people wanting to flank your team in small numbers.

You are best off moving around very slowly, imagining theres enemies around every corner. Imagine that you are really there and it is your only life, best way to survive in RO is to be immersed and assume that bullet can catch you around every piece of cover :D

Learn the gun sounds. It is so useful to be able to tell who is in that building across the street just by the gun sound. If you're behind enemy lines, it's a good idea to pick up enemy weapons, you'll be able to stay unnoticed longer.

If you're not sure if the guy in the distance is an enemy or a friendly, you better not take the shot. It might be a friendly that spent the last 5 minutes crawling through the bushes to flank that enemy MG that is mowing down your troops.

If an enemy has a good position at a window and you cant cross the street - give him some suppressing fire to help your teammates cross it. (Yes, suppressing fire DOES work in this game). If you're alone, try shooting in his direction while moving, you don't need a good aim but you might get him suppressed enough so he won't be able to shoot back effectively.

Change your position after every few kills. People you've killed - will come to get their revenge.
